WOODZ Completes Military Service and Prepares for a Triumphant Return

WOODZ enlisted in January of last year, serving in the Army's military band at the Korea Military Academy. During his service, he was recognized as an exemplary soldier, demonstrating dedication and commitment.
Remarkably, WOODZ achieved significant musical success while serving. His self-composed track 'Drowning,' released in April 2023, experienced a resurgence in popularity starting last October, topping various major music charts and even securing the number one spot on terrestrial music shows.
As WOODZ returns to civilian life amidst this wave of renewed interest, anticipation for his future endeavors is high. He is set to make his comeback performance at the '2025 SBS Gayo Daejeon SUMMER' on October 27, followed by an appearance at Japan's largest music festival, 'SUMMER SONIC 2025,' next month.
On the day of his discharge, WOODZ launched an official fan community on the global K-culture fan platform 'Berriz' at 2 PM and plans to host a live broadcast at 8 PM to connect with fans more closely.
In an exclusive Q&A, WOODZ shared insights about his military experience and future plans.
Q: Congratulations on your discharge! How do you feel about completing your military service?
A: When I first enlisted, I was worried it might be tough and time would drag, but 18 months flew by, and now I'm discharged. I feel incredibly happy.
Q: Reflecting on your 18 months of service, what kind of time was it for you?
A: It was an unforgettable period. The attention 'Drowning' received allowed me to gain recognition, and personally, it was a time to organize my thoughts in a more structured and relaxed environment than in civilian life.
Q: You were selected as an exemplary soldier. What was your most memorable moment during service?
A: I remember my first event vividly. After completing basic training, I participated in a recruitment event at Sejong University, where I had the chance to meet fans. It was surreal and special to meet people who love me as an artist while in uniform.
Q: How have you changed personally or musically during your service?
A: Working with friends who played classical instruments allowed me to hear various sounds, and I had many musical discussions with colleagues who played drums, guitar, and bass. This helped me focus more on the details when composing.
Q: 'Drowning' gained immense popularity during your service. How did you feel about its resurgence?
A: Until just before my discharge, I couldn't fully grasp the resurgence. Inside the base, I realized something was happening when officers and fellow soldiers approached me for autographs. Online, I saw many posts and felt grateful, resolving to work harder to meet the expectations.
Q: The song's popularity hasn't waned even after nine months, topping charts and winning music shows. How do you feel about this sustained success?
A: I don't usually focus on rankings when creating music, so I hadn't thought deeply about such moments. But facing them, I felt incredibly happy. I'll continue to focus on making good music and activities rather than rankings, but I'll strive to meet the expectations of those who have supported me.
Q: Any memorable comments from fans on your videos?
A: I remember comments saying 'Drowning' was rowing on its own or self-driving while I was in the military.
Q: What are your personal plans or things you want to do post-discharge?
A: I'm focusing a lot on music, which is my core work. I'm planning and paying attention to albums and concerts.
Q: Fans are eagerly anticipating your future albums. Can you share any plans or the type of music you intend to release?
A: I plan to explore rock, which I love, and create music that matches the mood I want to express in albums or lyrics. I aim to try various genres and deliver convincing music to many people.
Q: A message for fans who have waited for you?
A: MOODZ, I'm finally back. Your unwavering support and love helped me through tough times. I realized again in the military how much your love empowers me. I'll strive to be an artist you can proudly say you're a fan of. I don't take your love for granted and know its value. I'll show you my progress slowly. Thank you and I love you.
Q: Any final words?
A: I'm sincerely grateful to everyone who recognized me. Thanks to the overwhelming love during my service, I had a happy time. I'll prepare to repay that precious attention, so enjoy it. I'll humbly learn and strive to be a better person. Just as your small moments of interest created miraculous times for me, I'll work to contribute to your happiness.
I also want to thank everyone I served with. To all the soldiers protecting the country in this hot weather, I deeply respect and thank you.
