Actor Noh Sang-hyun Discusses His Role as a Sexual Minority in 'Love in the Big City'
On the 24th, Noh Sang-hyun conducted an interview at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, regarding the movie 'Love in the Big City,' sharing various stories.
'Love in the Big City' is based on the novel by writer Park Sang-young and depicts the unique love story of Jae-hee (played by Kim Go-eun), a free spirit who doesn't care about others' opinions, and Heung-soo (played by Noh Sang-hyun), who is used to distancing himself from the world. The film was invited to the 49th Toronto International Film Festival, one of the world's four major international film festivals, and received favorable reviews.
Making his screen debut, Noh Sang-hyun expressed his feelings, saying, "I'm glad the response (at the premiere) was good. I'm grateful. We shot the movie tightly last summer, and everyone worked hard and put in a lot of effort. I'm looking forward to finally meeting the audience."
Noh Sang-hyun played the role of Heung-soo, a sexual minority, in the film. While it could have been a burdensome role, Noh Sang-hyun said, "I didn't feel any burden; I just focused on understanding the character," adding, "I tried to express the emotions and psychological changes the character might have felt."
He actually met and talked with sexual minorities. Noh Sang-hyun shared, "I can't go into detail as it was their personal stories, but I heard about their pains, struggles, and the feelings they experienced after coming out."
Notably, Noh Sang-hyun also performed some rather intense skinship scenes with a male actor. He commented, "I didn't particularly mind. It was just very hot," adding, "The location was small. We shot in a motel, and there were many staff members, so it was much hotter. We were burning up," eliciting laughter.
He continued, "We both tried hard to make it well. Jung Hui, who played Soo-ho, had previously played a sexual minority role. I asked him for tips and we talked a lot."
'Love in the Big City' will be released on the 1st of next month.
