Jung Woo-sung, who brought up the refugee issue again, said, "I'm upset by the negative attention."
On the 4th, Jung Woo-sung attended the talk concert 'Refugees and the World We Live Together' held at the Taepyeong Hall of the Seoul City Hall Citizens' Hall to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the legal public interest group Now.
Jung Woo-sung started by saying, “Anyone can become a refugee at any time if a war breaks out,” adding, “The word refugee refers to someone who is in a very urgent crisis situation and needs help.” He added, “It puts a negative connotation on the word refugee and other “I’m upset that there are cases where stories are used in conjunction with it,” he said.
Regarding the prejudice and prejudice against refugees, Jung Woo-sung said, "There is a misunderstanding that they are trying to settle in a country where they can live a little better by making excuses because their economic situation is difficult." He added, "Even if there is a conflict in Korea and they have to leave, they will of course come back." “Just as they want to come, the ultimate goal of refugees is to return home,” he explained. He added, “Refugees have no shame even though they are receiving minimal protection and support,” adding, “They try to support their families through economic activities using their own abilities.”
Aiming at the part of society that views the refugee issue negatively, he said, "Not everything I do is desirable or just," but added, "It is a democratic country where there are many voices. Shouldn't there be people in this society who can speak out at this level?" “I’m working with that mindset,” he said.
Jung Woo-sung has been serving as Korea's goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 2014.
