The landscape of Sunday prime-time entertainment is set for a shake-up. With Kim Tae-ho PD leaving after a disappointing run, Na Young-seok PD returns with a new series after nine years, taking over the baton.
Kim Tae-ho PD's MBC show 'Manito Club' concluded on the 26th with a record low rating of 0.9%. Despite his star status, the show suffered a humiliating 0% rating during the weekend prime-time slot. The main reasons cited for its poor performance include inconsistent entertainment value due to varying cast members and a lack of clear direction. While the first season featuring Jennie and Dex showed promise, and the second season with Go Yoon-jung and Jung Hae-in aimed for a rebound, the third season's cast failed to deliver the same level of synergy.
The show's identity crisis was also significant. The individual 'Manito' segments borrowed from chase formats but felt more like simple gift exchanges, while group 'Manito' segments abruptly shifted to serving meals to firefighters or going on a workshop in Ulsan, disrupting viewer engagement. The lack of entertainment and emotional connection led to viewer attrition.
With Kim Tae-ho PD's departure, a new competitive landscape emerges. MBC is set to launch 'Choi Woo-soo Mountain' as a successor to 'Manito Club'. Premiering on the 3rd, this show is the first-ever mountain variety show where participants complete missions to collect acorns and compete for the summit. Veteran entertainers like Yoo Se-yoon, Jang Dong-min, Heo Kyung-hwan, and Boom join the cast, aiming to turn the tide.
On the same day, tvN unveils Na Young-seok PD's new project 'Youth Over Flowers: Limited Edition'. This marks the return of the 'Youth Over Flowers' series after approximately nine years since 2017. The journey features actors Jung Yu-mi, Park Seo-joon, and Choi Woo-shik.
This series promises a different approach from previous Na Young-seok shows. While past 'Youth Over Flowers' series emphasized the raw fun of sudden abductions and unplanned travels, this limited edition imposes strict financial constraints on the cast, leading to a 'hardship journey'. This survival aspect under a tight budget is expected to evoke nostalgia for past series while offering a new viewing angle.
However, there are concerns. Jung Yu-mi, Park Seo-joon, and Choi Woo-shik have already worked together on several shows like 'Youn's Kitchen'. The absence of Lee Seo-jin, who previously anchored the team, has divided viewer opinions. How Na Young-seok PD differentiates this recurring theme of overseas travel from past 'Youth Over Flowers' fame will be crucial for its success.
The connection between these two star PDs, who previously competed in the same time slot, continues in the form of a 'baton pass'. Last year, Kim Tae-ho PD's 'My Name is Gabriel' struggled with a 1% rating, while Na Young-seok PD's 'Youn's Kitchen 2' triumphed with nearly 10%. Although not a direct competition this time, all eyes are on whether Na Young-seok PD can erase the shadow of Kim Tae-ho PD's underperformance and reignite the Sunday evening entertainment scene.
As Kim Tae-ho PD's lackluster results fade into the background, the focus shifts to whether Na Young-seok PD can once again prove his worth as a 'star PD'. Who will ultimately capture the hearts of viewers in the newly restructured Sunday entertainment market?
