Director Han Tae-seop of SBS's upcoming Friday-Saturday drama 'Brave New World' has shared his trust in actress Lim Ji-yeon and the behind-the-scenes of her casting. The drama, set to premiere on May 8 at 9:50 PM, is a romantic comedy about a nameless actress, Shin Se-ri, possessed by the spirit of a notorious Joseon villainess, and Cha Se-gye, a ruthless chaebol known as a monster of capitalism. Directed by Han Tae-seop, known for 'Stove League' and 'Cheer Up', and written by newcomer Kang Hyun-joo, the series stars Lim Ji-yeon and Heo Nam-joon in their first romantic pairing.
Director Han expressed his confidence in Lim Ji-yeon, stating, "Lim Ji-yeon was the top choice for both the writer and me. Her unique charm, proven through various roles, mirrors the resilience of Shin Se-ri, who navigates through life's turbulent fate." He added, "Lim Ji-yeon embodies the adorable yet delightful character of Shin Se-ri, making her the 'one and only' choice for the role."
He further shared, "During a winter shoot where Dan-sim drinks poison, Lim Ji-yeon's intense performance made me forget the cold. Watching her through the monitor, I felt a bone-chilling realism. She is an actress who creates characters only she can portray."
Director Han praised Lim Ji-yeon's comedic performance, saying, "Her expressive power was fierce." He highlighted scenes like Se-ri slapping Se-gye with a flower, becoming a home shopping sensation, and channeling Kim Du-han, promising viewers will be in stitches. He also urged viewers to pay attention to the moments when the 18th-century Confucian woman Shin Se-ri challenges modern values, providing both exhilaration and inspiration.
Regarding Heo Nam-joon as Cha Se-gye, Han said, "He was cast for his homme fatale charm, but he also has a comedic talent." He anticipated that Heo's blend of comedy and masculinity would create a dynamic tension with Shin Se-ri. Han teased the development of Cha Se-gye's romance, who initially disregards the value of love, hinting at the rise of a new romantic comedy king.
Director Han expressed confidence in Heo Nam-joon's flexible and delicate acting style, which he believed would create optimal chemistry with co-stars. He described the filming atmosphere as lively, with Lim and Heo engaging playfully with colleagues but focusing intensely when the cameras rolled.
Actor Jang Seung-jo's role was also highlighted. Han noted, "Jang Seung-jo brings depth to the light-hearted narrative with his portrayal of the complex character Choi Moon-do, grounding the story." He mentioned their discussions on the nature of 'villains', emphasizing Jang's dedication in crafting a compelling character.
Director Han also expressed his trust in writer Kang Hyun-joo, stating, "The script was the primary focus of the production. 'Brave New World' is a project that emerged from Kang's deep emotions and comedic flair, aiming to move and persuade audiences." He emphasized the importance of faithfully conveying the script's details to achieve a unique yet universal love story.
Han praised the team's dedication, saying, "The 'Brave New World' team united with a shared goal to deliver a great work, filming passionately in the cold winter." He expressed excitement and anticipation for the show's premiere.
Finally, Director Han highlighted the show's key points, stating, "The clash of vivid characters and the performances of top-notch actors offer extreme immersion. The comedy provides a refreshing end to a tiring day, and the romance offers unique comfort." He promised that the series would deliver explosive synergy with its vibrant characters and romantic comedy charm, urging viewers to look forward to the endings that will leave them eager for the next episode.
