G-Dragon Faces Ongoing Vocal Criticism: A Call for Improvement

BIGBANG's G-Dragon continues to face criticism over his vocal abilities, with concerns about his 'inability to hit high notes' and excessive stage mannerisms persisting for three years. Critics suggest that efforts to improve are necessary for his long-term health and career longevity.

G-Dragon Faces Ongoing Vocal Criticism: A Call for Improvement

BIGBANG performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on April 13th. The group held a solo live performance on the Outdoor Theatre stage and is set to perform again during the second weekend of Coachella on April 19th.

During the performance, G-Dragon appeared to struggle with some of the live songs, particularly in the higher vocal ranges. He strained his vocal muscles, causing his voice to crack, and ultimately sang an octave lower than usual. This is a stark contrast to his performances in the 2010s when he effortlessly hit these notes.

In rap parts requiring emotional intensity, he excessively used a growling technique, which grated on the audience. This contrasts with his previous stable performances in softer rap and ballads. His past stage presence was noted for being charming without being over-the-top.

The controversy over G-Dragon's live performances is relatively recent. Up until BIGBANG's last full-member concert in 2017, he was praised for his vocal prowess. Criticism began in 2024 at the 'SBS Gayo Daejeon' for his excessive vocal techniques and reliance on AR. Similar critiques followed at the 'Übermensch' concert and the '2025 MAMA AWARDS' and '2025 MMA'.

While technical issues like sound problems have been cited, these are common challenges for all artists and do not fully explain the perceived decline in his abilities.

At Coachella, the live, unedited sound highlighted the skill gap between G-Dragon and his bandmates Daesung and Taeyang. Daesung delivered a relaxed yet powerful vocal performance, while Taeyang impressed with precise pitch and stable breath control, even while dancing.

G-Dragon Faces Ongoing Vocal Criticism: A Call for Improvement

BIGBANG, a symbol of K-pop from the late 2000s to the 2010s, has left a lasting impact. G-Dragon, as a solo artist, released numerous hits like 'Heartbreaker', 'CRAYON', and 'That XX', resonating with audiences in their 20s and 30s.

While nostalgic fans continue to support G-Dragon regardless of his vocal performance, the general public's reaction is mixed. One user on the platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) compared a 10-year-old performance of 'BAD BOY' to Coachella, noting a significant difference. Other online comments express disappointment, noting that while his voice has improved since last year, it doesn't match his peak years.

Regardless of public opinion, G-Dragon must find a suitable vocal technique to maintain his health and career. Continued strain on his vocal muscles could lead to long-term damage. Reflecting on what truly defines his stage presence is crucial, as many fans long for the sweet voice and relaxed stage manner that captivated audiences in the 2010s.
