Olympic Snowboarder Yoo Seung-eun's Inspiring Journey: From Injuries to Historic Medals

The incredible journey of Yoo Seung-eun, the first Olympic medalist in the 'Big Air' snowboarding category, was unveiled.

On the October 21st episode of MBC's variety show 'The Manager', the cinematic story of Yoo Seung-eun, South Korea's first female Olympic medalist in snow sports, was revealed. Despite her shy demeanor in the studio, Yoo admitted, "I'm more nervous than at the Olympics," but she was a powerhouse on the board. At the recent Olympics, she successfully executed a backside triple 1440° and a front triple 1440° consecutively, a feat only two athletes in the world can achieve. This left everyone present in awe. Yoo also shared that it was her first time performing these tricks on snow, having only practiced on air mats before, saying, "I felt more confident on the snow," showcasing her unique mindset.

Behind the World-Class Skills: The Hidden Struggles

However, the glory came with its challenges. Just three months before the Olympics, Yoo faced a series of injuries, including fractures in her collarbone, ankle, and wrist, making her contemplate quitting. Yet, she confessed that the fear of wasting camp expenses was greater than the pain, a testament to her mother's dedication. With no facilities in Korea, overseas training costs exceeded $100,000 annually.

To support this, Yoo's mother worked multiple jobs. Despite a broken ankle, Yoo flew economy class back home. Her mother, Lee Hee-jung, tearfully recalled, "It wasn't just a fracture; her ligaments were torn, and her ankle was twisted, but she endured it. I felt guilty for not upgrading her ticket." Yoo's heartfelt words, "Mom, let's pay off the debt now," during her prize interview resonated deeply, moving the studio to tears.

After Revealing Her Debt: A Surprise Dance Performance

Despite the hardships, Yoo's positive confidence captivated everyone, leading to an impromptu dance session with Nana. During the show, Nana reminisced about her Orange Caramel days and shared a recent challenge with students. Yoo, too, revealed her familiarity with 'Orange Caramel' dances through Reels. She confidently started dancing, and Nana joined in, perfectly executing the choreography to the hit song 'Catallena', leaving viewers enchanted.

Next week's episode will feature the return of 'Chinese Cuisine Goddess' Park Eun-young. She will shop for exotic ingredients at the market, visit her mentor Chef Yeo Kyung-rae's restaurant, and meet her close chef friend Yoon Nam-no, showcasing her vibrant and charming personality. Additionally, actor Kwon Hwa-woon will be featured, setting a record in his first full marathon and balancing his acting career with a delivery job, leaving a lasting impression with his passionate lifestyle.
