Actress Oh Yoon-ah has candidly shared the challenges she faces as a celebrity mother raising a child with developmental disabilities, drawing significant attention.
On the 10th, a short-form video titled 'Tearful Chat with Autism Moms' was uploaded to the YouTube channel 'Oh! Yoon-ah.' In the video, Oh Yoon-ah met with parents of children with autism to share their experiences.
Oh Yoon-ah expressed her emotions, saying, "Hearing people say, 'I came out, became brighter, and got a job because of you,' is so touching and I'm grateful." She added, "I hope many people find strength, but I can't fully understand everything," and admitted, "I wonder how much I can help them."
Criticism Faced as a Celebrity Mother
Oh Yoon-ah also drew attention by sharing her experiences of criticism as a celebrity mother raising a child with disabilities. She confessed, "Some people might find me uncomfortable," and revealed, "There are quite a few who think, 'Why is she so confident?' or 'It's because she's a celebrity that she can raise a child like that.'"
She continued, "Is this right? Is it right to open up and share this with people? Am I making it harder for them, showing a life of comparison?" She added, "When I film videos while traveling, I always wonder if it's right. I question if it's appropriate to show a comfortable life when there are people struggling to raise children with disabilities." Despite these concerns, she expressed gratitude and courage after meeting supporters who encourage her.
Why Oh Yoon-ah Joined 'Pyeonstorang' with Her Son
Previously, in April 2020, Oh Yoon-ah appeared on the KBS variety show 'Pyeonstorang' with her son Min, who has developmental disabilities, showcasing their journey together and receiving much love. She revealed her reason for joining the show, saying, "I wanted children on the autism spectrum to be more warmly accepted by people."
Oh Yoon-ah, originally a racing model, has appeared in various works such as 'While You Were Sleeping,' 'Oh My Geum-bi,' and 'Once Again.' She married a non-celebrity in 2007 and gave birth to a son in August of the same year. However, after eight years of marriage, she went through a divorce and is now raising her son with developmental disabilities on her own.
