Disney+ has claimed the top spot in new subscriber numbers, surpassing the long-standing leader Netflix, thanks to the buzz surrounding the variety show 'Fate War 49'.

Last month, Disney+'s Monthly Active Users (MAU) reached 4,065,691, marking a 28.12% increase from the previous month (3,173,269). The platform also saw the highest number of new installations at 660,000, followed by Coupang Play with 530,000, Netflix with 510,000, and TVING with 500,000. Data analytics firm IGAWorks attributes the surge in user engagement to the popularity of 'Fate War 49'.

'Fate War 49' is a program that prominently features the philosophical and abstract concept of 'fate'. It involves 49 shamans, fortune tellers, tarot experts, and physiognomists interpreting fate in their unique ways, which has captivated audiences. Despite some criticisms regarding its direction and editing, each episode has garnered significant attention, contributing to the platform's user growth.

The show has also received international attention. Variety reported that "'Fate War 49' has surpassed the viewership record set by the Disney+ series 'Moving' (2023)," and noted that it is "one of the most anticipated new series in the Asia-Pacific region, with localization efforts underway for expansion into other markets."

Meanwhile, Netflix is experiencing a temporary slowdown. Analysts suggest that the lack of standout original content following 'Black and White Chef 2' has contributed to this. However, Netflix is expected to regain momentum with the upcoming live broadcast of BTS's comeback concert on the 21st, marking its first global live event from Korea. Additionally, a feature-length documentary 'BTS: The Return', detailing the album production process, is set to release on the 27th.

The impact of Disney+'s 'Fate War 49' in proving the platform's competitive edge is significant. There is already speculation about the possibility of a second season. However, industry insiders suggest that improvements in direction and editing are necessary to match the show's buzz. The focus will be on whether the series will expand and how its production quality will be enhanced.
