Singer Huh Chan-mi is aiming for the 'Trot Queen' title after a decade of perseverance. Her relentless pursuit through numerous auditions and challenges has led her to the finals of 'Miss Trot 4.'
On the 26th episode of TV Chosun's 'Miss Trot 4,' the semi-finals, the last hurdle before the finals, took place. Huh Chan-mi chose Kim Sang-bae's 'No, No' and captivated the stage with her explosive vocals and controlled emotional expression, earning praise for her 'experience' from master Jang Yoon-jung. She scored a total of 2406 points, combining master scores and real-time text votes, securing the top spot and advancing to the finals. Notably, she garnered overwhelming support, sweeping 130,000 out of 850,000 valid text votes.
Huh Chan-mi's momentum was evident from her first stage on 'Miss Trot 4.' She started with a bang, receiving 'all hearts' in the master preliminary round, and maintained her top position through the first genre team mission and the second one-on-one death match without facing elimination. She continued to hold the top spot in the fourth round and the semi-finals, emerging as a strong contender for the win.
Named as the top finalist, Huh Chan-mi sat on the stage in tears. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "I have tried multiple times in audition programs. I hoped there wouldn't be a fifth attempt. Thank you for voting for me."
Huh Chan-mi's journey has not been smooth. Once known as a trainee in the debut lineup for Girls' Generation at SM Entertainment, she debuted with the group Co-Ed School but ceased activities after a year without gaining much attention. Her attempt to make a comeback on Mnet's 'Produce 101' turned her into a victim of 'evil editing.'
During that time, Huh Chan-mi faced public backlash as her vocal slip-ups due to vocal cord nodules were repeatedly broadcasted. Her sister claimed it was 'evil editing,' but a representative stated, "There was no distortion in editing. Her poor vocal condition was sufficiently explained."
In 2023, Huh Chan-mi appeared on MBC's 'Tongue' and revealed, "On the show, I was portrayed as a greedy person who made vocal mistakes. Watching the broadcast with my family, there was silence. My mom went to her room and cried." She confessed that the shock led to social phobia, saying, "I lived with blackout curtains drawn. I didn't eat or leave my room, and my dad had to unlock the door with tweezers, fearing I might harm myself."
Despite the trauma, her challenges continued. She appeared on JTBC's 'Mix Nine' in 2017 and 'Miss Trot 2' in 2020, but the results were not favorable. In 'Mix Nine,' she finished 7th but did not debut, and in 'Miss Trot 2,' she was eliminated at the finals, finishing 11th.
Despite her talent, Huh Chan-mi often faced disappointing outcomes. 'Miss Trot 4' offers her a chance to overcome past grievances. Now, the final showdown awaits, where she will compete against talented contenders like Lee Sona (2nd), Hong Sung-yoon (3rd), Yoon Tae-hwa (4th), and Gil Ryeo-won (5th). All eyes are on whether Huh Chan-mi, after a decade-long audition journey, will finally claim the crown.
