Actor Kim Seok-hoon Expresses Anxiety Over Holiday Feasting: A Look into Brain Health

Actor Kim Seok-hoon (53) has expressed significant anxiety as the holiday season approaches.

On January 15th at 8:35 AM, SBS will air a special episode of 'Three Perspectives' that tackles the common holiday dilemma: "Is it okay to indulge just because it's a holiday?" The program warns that even a momentary lapse in judgment can send critical signals to our brain.

The brain is an intricately designed organ, irreplaceable and crucial to our health. Unlike other organs that can be transplanted, the brain requires proactive care to prevent disease. The middle cerebral artery, a vital passage in the brain, has a wall thickness of just 0.2-0.3mm, comparable to two sheets of A4 paper. This artery thins with age and is naturally narrower in women, necessitating extra caution.

MC Kim Seok-hoon shares, "The idea that once the brain starts hurting, there's nothing you can do about it, really sticks with me," adding, "I feel more anxious about the rich holiday foods as the Lunar New Year approaches." The show explores the balance between enjoying a delicious meal and maintaining brain health.

Gastroenterologist Woo Seung-min recounts his personal experience with a brain hemorrhage, "Even as a doctor, I suffered a brain hemorrhage. Fortunately, I survived, but I was left paralyzed, unable to move my hands or walk properly." He emphasizes the importance of prevention and consistent management, sharing that he has returned to normal life through intense effort and rehabilitation.

Family medicine specialist Lee Seo-hyun highlights the limitations of blood pressure and cholesterol medications, stating, "These drugs only temporarily lower numbers by slowing heartbeats or inhibiting cholesterol production; they don't clean the underlying fatty deposits on the brain's blood vessel walls." She advises that maintaining vascular health requires managing these deposits with healthy fats, recommending a balanced intake of Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends an ideal Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio of 1:4. However, modern diets, heavily reliant on takeout and processed foods, have skewed this balance to a concerning 1:20. This imbalance continuously assaults the brain's delicate 0.2mm blood vessels, causing chronic inflammation and potentially leading to strokes. The episode will focus on strategies to protect brain vessels from the 'Omega-6 bomb' of holiday foods and the critical golden time for action.

Join MC Kim Seok-hoon, writer Kwak Jae-sik, docent Lee Chang-yong, gastroenterologist Woo Seung-min, and family medicine specialist Lee Seo-hyun as they delve into maintaining 'oil balance' for brain health from three perspectives in the 34th episode of 'Three Perspectives,' airing at 8:35 AM.
