STAYC's Sieun has spoken out regarding her dual role casting in the musical 'Seopyeonje'.
On April 2, the production team of 'Seopyeonje' announced the cast for the 2026 season, ahead of its opening on April 30. Sieun, along with Lee Ja-ram, Cha Ji-yeon, and Lee Bom-sori, has been cast in the role of Songhwa. Additionally, traditional singer Jeong Eun-hye has been cast as the 'Elder Songhwa'.
The role of Elder Songhwa is a new addition this season. Previously, a single actor portrayed Songhwa throughout her life, from youth to old age. This season, however, Sieun will play the younger Songhwa, while Jeong Eun-hye will portray the elder version, leading to some fans questioning if this was a special favor.
Sieun addressed these concerns on a fan communication platform, stating, "It's challenging for me to portray a character in her 70s with my face. There might be a sense of dissonance," adding, "I am said to be the youngest Songhwa ever, which is quite a burden in many ways."
The production company PAGE1 explained their casting decision by stating, "Starting in 2026, we aim to expand the casting landscape of 'Seopyeonje' in a more open manner, allowing young and promising actors to take on more active roles in the production."
The musical 'Seopyeonje', featuring Sieun, will run from April 30 to July 19 at the BBCH Hall in Gwanglim Art Center, Gangnam, Seoul.
