Remembering Koo Hara: Six Years Since Her Passing and Her Lasting Impact
The sixth anniversary of the late singer Koo Hara's passing has arrived.

Koo Hara was found deceased at her home in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, on November 24, 2019, at the age of 28. At the time, police reported no evidence of foul play. A short note left by Koo was reportedly found on a table.

Koo Hara joined the group KARA in 2008 with their first mini-album. She played a pivotal role in the group's success with hits like 'Pretty Girl,' 'Mister,' 'Jumping,' and 'Lupin.' KARA gained immense popularity in Japan during the Hallyu wave, with Koo as a central member.

However, Koo faced legal battles during her solo career with her ex-boyfriend, hair designer Choi Jong-bum(최종범), who was sentenced to one year in prison for assault and threats against her.

After her passing, Koo Hara became the catalyst for the 'Koo Hara Act,' which gained attention. This civil law amendment restricts inheritance rights for family members who fail to fulfill their duty of care or commit serious crimes like abuse. Her brother, Koo Ho-in, initiated the discussion for this legislation.

Koo's mother, who left the family when Koo was nine, reappeared after nearly 20 years at the funeral with a lawyer, demanding half of the inheritance. Koo Ho-in filed for a division of the estate, and the Gwangju Family Court awarded a 6:4 inheritance split, recognizing the father's contribution to Koo's upbringing.

The 'Koo Hara Act' began its legislative process in 2020 but was initially discarded due to the expiration of the 20th and 21st National Assembly terms. It was later passed by the 22nd National Assembly and is set to be implemented in January 2026.

KARA returned to the stage in 2022 with the new song 'When I Move,' marking their first release in seven years. The members fondly remembered Koo, stating, "Hara is still with us."
