The world-renowned boxer and Filipino legend, who made history by winning titles in eight different weight classes, quietly departed from 'Physical: Asia.' Although he was not injured, Pacquiao stated he had to return to his homeland to fulfill 'national duties,' leaving Netflix in a state of surprise.
News of Pacquiao's participation surfaced in early February. Director Yoo Ki-Hwan announced at the 'Next on Netflix 2025 Korea' event that Pacquiao would represent the Philippines in 'Physical: Asia.'
The industry buzzed with excitement over the legend's appearance. Although several Netflix films, shows, and series were previewed that day, Pacquiao's involvement was the highlight.
In September, the 'Netflix Entertainment Festival 2025' provided more details about 'Physical: Asia.' Netflix introduced the show by highlighting, "Legendary boxing champion Manny Pacquiao leads as the representative of the Philippines, with top physical competitors from across Asia battling for national pride."
Producer Jang Ho-gi commented, "Having Pacquiao as the Philippine representative added a sense of pride, making the competition more intense and captivating for viewers. It's something to look forward to."
While the prize money of 1 billion won was significant, Pacquiao's presence drew more attention to 'Physical: Asia.' The show premiered on October 28, with four episodes released in the first week. When Pacquiao appeared during the Philippines' introduction, the cast expressed surprise and admiration.
Despite being a veteran, Pacquiao demonstrated selflessness for his team. Although the Philippines was considered one of the weaker teams among the eight countries, Pacquiao's presence alone commanded attention.
On November 4, two more episodes were released. After winning a deathmatch, the Philippines advanced to the next round, but Pacquiao suddenly announced his departure. Without any major injuries, he stated he needed to leave to fulfill his national duties, quietly exiting the show.
Pacquiao retired from boxing in 2021 to pursue a political career. He ran for the Philippine presidency in 2022 but faced defeat. Following the election, Pacquiao experienced political challenges in the Philippines and lost a senatorial bid in May.
'Physical: Asia' garnered attention for a long time due to Pacquiao's involvement. His sudden exit left the production team surprised and fans longing for more of his veteran spirit. The members who competed alongside him also marked the end of their shared journey.
