The Korean original musical 'Maybe Happy Ending', which tells the story of a helper robot discovering love, is sweeping the prestigious Tony Awards in the United States.
On the 8th (local time), at the 78th Tony Awards held at Radio City Music Hall in New York, the Korean musical 'Maybe Happy Ending' won awards for Best Book, Best Scenic Design, and Best Original Score.
'Maybe Happy Ending' was nominated in a total of 10 categories, including Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations, Best Leading Actor, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design.
During the pre-award ceremony, 'Maybe Happy Ending' secured the Best Book and Best Scenic Design awards (Dane Laffrey, George Reeve). Director Park Chun-hyu made history as the first Korean creator to win a Tony Award.
Set in the future, 'Maybe Happy Ending' is an original musical about robots Oliver and Claire, who were created to assist humans, falling in love. The musical, a collaboration between Korean writer Park Chun-hyu and American composer Will Aronson, premiered in Korea in 2016 and officially opened at the Belasco Theatre in Manhattan, New York, last November, marking its Broadway debut.
Featuring local actors, 'Maybe Happy Ending' also won six awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Original Score, Best Lyrics, Best Book, and Best Scenic Design, at the 69th Drama Desk Awards, a ceremony nearly as prestigious as the Tonys, on June 2. The following day, it was named Best Broadway Musical at the Dorian Theater Awards.
