Interview with director Lee Sang-yong, who directed the movie 'Sin City 3'
Director Lee Sang-yong, who directed the movie 'Crime City 3', mentioned Cha Woo-jin, who was in charge of the screenplay.
On the morning of the 30th, director Lee Sang-yong told various stories about the upcoming movie 'Crime City 3' at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
'Criminal City 3' is a monster detective Ma Seok-do (Ma Dong-seok) moves to Gwangsu University in Seoul to catch Joo Seong-cheol (Lee Jun-hyeok), who is behind a new drug crime case, and Ricky (Aoki Munetaka), another villain involved in a drug case. It depicts an exhilarating crime-fighting operation for the sake of others.
Director Lee Sang-yong served as an assistant director for 'Criminal City' and led the team. For him, 'Sin City 2' is his debut work. Having made his directorial debut with 'Sin City 2', he had the good fortune of directing 'Sin City 3'.
The screenplay for 'Crime City 3' was written by Kim Min-seong, who was in charge of the script for 'Criminal City', and Cha Woo-jin (real name Ye Dong-woo), Ma Dong-seok's brother-in-law and his wife Ye Jung-hwa's younger sister. Ma Dong-seok also revealed that he was satisfied with Cha Woo-jin's script. In particular, Cha Woo-jin participated as an actor in 'Sin City 2' and as a screenwriter in 'Sin City 3'.
On this day, director Lee Sang-yong said, “Should I call him writer Cha Woo-jin? After finishing ‘Sin City 2’, there were several scripts he wrote. Writer Kim Min-seong was writing it, and I also commissioned writer Cha Woo-jin. Writer Cha Woo-jin changed the frame well again," he said.
"The work on 'Crime City 2' was finished in December 2021. As soon as it was over, I received the screenplay from writer Cha Woo-jin on December 24. So the next day was Christmas, so I said 'too much'. And on December 31, I had a meeting. They said let's do it. The God by God meeting was held until 4:00 am. On January 1st, at 12:00, we had a meeting with the representatives and actor Ma Dong-seok for an adaptation. After revising the adaptation over and over again, we came this far."
Director Lee Sang-yong said, "Actually, it is difficult for the movie to be released. It took me five years, but I think I worked with the power of releasing 'Criminal City 2'. It became a box office hit when I wondered if I had brought something new while working. And with that energy. worked," he said.
Director Lee Sang-yong said of Cha Woo-jin, "The first time I met Cha Woo-jin was in the movie 'Long Live the King: Mokpo Hero.' I was auditioning for 'City 2', and that friend also auditioned.
He also said, "He did a good job of acting cheeky and shameless. When he was cast, his relationship (with actor Ma Dong-seok) was like that. He said, 'Is this okay?' He said he did well when reading and practicing with his back, and he said it was okay. You know everything because you watched the movie. I'm satisfied."
Director Lee Sang-yong said, "I lost a handful of hair while filming. He spoke the lines shamelessly and did it realistically. Later, he said that he had written a scenario. When I was filming for a while, I saw the scenario, and it wasn't bad. I'm still working on a scenario that I'm talking to Hollywood about. When I saw the script for 'Sin City 3', it wasn't bad because it had a completely different structure (from the previous part)."
Not only that, "The character Ricky came out was a setting brought by writer Cha Woo-jin. I liked it, and I thought I wanted to stick to it. You may think that the villain is weak, but I don't think it is weak at all. The quality is different from the previous villain. It's a role. Joo Seong-cheol is the main character compared to other films. He is riding the main character line. Someone from the outside shakes the board. Going to the second half, that part was attractive."
Directed by Lee Sang-yong, 'Sin City 3' will be released on the 31st.
