Director Park Chan-wook revealed the behind-the-scenes work of the movie 'War of War' in collaboration with Netflix.
At 1:30 pm on the 21st, the 'Netflix & Park Chan-wook with Future Filmmaker' event was broadcast live online. Film critic Lee Dong-jin, director Park Chan-wook, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, and students dreaming of future filmmakers participated.
Director Park Chan-wook was in charge of the script and production of 'The Battle' starring Kang Dong-won, Park Jung-min, Cha Seung-won, and Kim Shin-rok. 'War' deals with the chaotic era in which the war broke out. The film depicts the story of Jong-ryeo (Park Jung-min), the son of the best military official in Joseon, and his handmaid, Cheon-yeong (Kang Dong-won), who become enemies with the military officer closest to Seonjo (Cha Seung-won) and meet again.
He said, “Netflix supported us well, so it became a collaboration. I think it would be nice to have more money for film production no matter how much it is. There are always limits. Each investor and studio is different. Netflix promises good support, so I am enjoying my work. There is not much interference, and of course you will only know after editing, but so far it's okay," he said, expressing his impressions of collaboration.
In response, CEO Ted Sarandos said, “First of all, I am really happy. The Korean movie I did with Netflix was 'Okja' directed by Bong Joon-ho. 'War' deals with a story closely related to Korea, and I don't think the budget will be an issue at all," he explained.
College students aspiring to become filmmakers participated in this event and talked about the future of Korean films and the issues of change in theater districts.
