MBN's 'K-Bakery Survival' Showcases Top 10 Contestants in Thrilling Semifinals
'K-Bakery Survival' is the first-ever 'K-Bakery Survival' show in Korea, aiming to select the world's best pastry chef, riding the wave of the 'K-Bread' trend. As the Top 10 enter the 'Semifinals' leading to the finals, the upcoming 8th episode, airing on March 22, will feature the 'Local Heritage' mission, showcasing the new world of K-local bread. This episode will determine the Top 7 advancing to the finals, drawing significant attention. The Top 10 contestants, who are fiercely competing for a ticket to the finals, have shown remarkable skills leading up to the semifinals.
Hwang Ji-oh, Kim Jin-seo, and Kwak Dong-wook have been active as 'idea banks,' impressing with their creativity. 'Crazy Patissier' Hwang Ji-oh amazed with his 'Ballerina' dessert, featuring caramel made from soy sauce, gochujang, and doenjang, and xylitol ballerina ornaments. In the K-local bread mission, he crafted a moon jar-shaped bread with intricate details. Youngest contestant Kim Jin-seo showcased his storytelling prowess, starting with 'Bukhansan Snow' and creating a 'Mugwort, Baekseolgi Cream Bread' in the third round. His 'Burrata Bread,' using Imshil cheese, went viral with 680,000 views on shorts.
Lee Hye-seong, Sung Min-soo, and Joo Young-seok, known by their nicknames 'Baking Announcer,' 'Cannoli Prince,' and 'Baking Idol,' respectively, have faced stereotypes. Lee Hye-seong, despite not running a bakery, impressed judges with sourdough using his five-year-old 'levain.' He surprised everyone by defeating Lee Hong-kyu in the 'Soboro Battle' with his unique combination of soboro and Monte Cristo.
Sung Min-soo reinterpreted the Italian dessert 'Cannoli' in the first round, receiving sharp criticism from Kwon Sung-joon. However, he made a triumphant comeback in the '30-Minute No Oven Mission' of the 'Redemption Round,' earning unanimous approval. Joo Young-seok, initially overshadowed by his idol past, consistently impressed Master Lee Seok-won with his basics and cream skills, proving himself a 'silent powerhouse.' He boldly challenged and defeated Im Dong-seok, a 'favorite to win,' in the '1-on-1 Deathmatch,' establishing himself as a dark horse.
Lee Kyung-moo and Kim Si-yeop have emerged as 'hidden gems' with solid skills that shine brighter with each episode. 'Dessert Macho' Lee Kyung-moo, known for his rugged charm and fierce pre-match stare-downs, is a runner-up in the 2024 Baking World Cup in France, showcasing his exceptional finesse. In the '1-on-1 Deathmatch,' he reinterpreted Monica using tiger beans, makgeolli, and lemon butter, achieving a perfect balance of flavors.
Kim Si-yeop, despite a disappointing 27th place in the first round, showcased his true potential as the 'Jeju Blue Ribbon Rich' in the team-based second round. In the 'Gloomy Day' team, he crafted 'Busse' with a cloud-like texture, earning high praise from Master Lee Seok-won. In the third round's 'Shrimp Snack Battle,' he created shrimp-shaped dough, demonstrating precision and a perfect crispy exterior.
Yoon Hwa-young and Jang Kyung-joo consistently impress with their 'unmatched' skills. 'Fine Dining Baker' Yoon Hwa-young passed the first round with excellent flavor harmony, even as chef bakers were eliminated. In the third round, she created 'BabaOCK,' a three-stage bread experience with 'Sikhye,' setting a new standard for 'fine dining-style baking.'
Jang Kyung-joo, the first Korean woman to win first place in the prestigious IBA Cup, showcased the essence of 'K-Bakery' with olive-filled ciabatta in the first round. In the team-based second round, she led her team to first place with her 'cloud' concept, demonstrating her versatility. In the third round, she proved her skills with 'Choco Choco Pie Chewy Rice Cake Bread,' raising expectations for her continued success.
The production team stated, "With only one step away from the finals, all Top 10 contestants will engage in an intense showdown in the 'Semifinals.' We ask for your anticipation and interest in the 'Local Heritage' mission, which will open a 'new world of K-Bread' with amazing pastry creations."
'K-Bakery Survival' Episode 8 will air on March 22 at 9:50 PM. Behind-the-scenes stories of the Top 10 in the 'Semifinals' can be found on MBN's official YouTube channel.
