Chef Lim Sung-geun Resumes YouTube Activities Amidst Controversy: Public Opinion Divided
On the 18th, Lim Sung-geun's YouTube channel 'Lim Sung-geun Lim Jjang TV' uploaded a video titled 'Prepared this to counter the greasiness of holiday food.' This marks his return approximately a month after the controversy erupted. Notably, just five days after resuming activities on the 13th, he released a new video, indicating a full-fledged operation of his channel.
In the video, Lim introduces a spicy stir-fried ramen recipe, calmly explaining the cooking process and tips. He made no mention of the controversies surrounding his past convictions. By presenting cooking content in the same format as before, he effectively normalized his channel.
Some critics are questioning whether there was adequate reflection on his responsibilities, given the significant social impact of his repeated drunk driving offenses and assault-related convictions. They argue that resuming content uploads without a period of reflection or a concrete promise to prevent recurrence is hasty. Having built an image as a star chef through various shows like 'Black and White Chef 2,' there are calls for him to demonstrate corresponding responsibility in his comeback process.
The fact that he resumed activities through a personal YouTube channel, rather than broadcasting, is also noteworthy. Unlike TV appearances, YouTube allows creators to decide production and release timings, making it a common avenue for resuming activities post-controversy. Some speculate that he might be using YouTube as a stepping stone for a TV comeback, while others view personal channel activities as his choice.
As the controversy grew, he issued an apology and announced a halt to his broadcasting activities. However, he stated that he would proceed with the planned opening of a Korean restaurant in Paju City. When rumors of the restaurant's cancellation arose, he clarified, "It's not true," and explained that they are preparing to open between late February and March.
Lim Sung-geun has returned to YouTube after a month. With public opinion divided, there is keen interest in his future actions.
