Baseball Star Hwang Jae-gyun Opens Up About Divorce and Thoughts on Remarriage

Baseball player Hwang Jae-gyun, who recently divorced Jiyeon, candidly shared his views on relationships and remarriage.

On November 2, the YouTube channel 'Jjanhyung Shin Dong-yup' released an episode titled 'Off-Season Alcohol Monster Ryu Hyun-jin, Hwang Jae-gyun, Son Ah-seop, Bae Ji-hyun [Jjanhyung EP.130]'. The episode featured Ryu Hyun-jin and Bae Ji-hyun, along with Hwang Jae-gyun and Son Ah-seop, engaging in an open conversation about baseball and their personal views on relationships.

Hwang Jae-gyun lightened the mood by bringing out Mexican tequila he had prepared. Ryu Hyun-jin commented, "I don't really like sweet drinks. This is definitely aimed at women," to which Son Ah-seop added, "He knows what women like," eliciting laughter.

Hwang mentioned his connection with the Ryu Hyun-jin and Bae Ji-hyun couple, telling Bae Ji-hyun, "You're Hyun-jin's first love." Shin Dong-yup summarized, "So we all married our first loves," prompting Hwang to pause before humorously agreeing, "Yes, me too," causing laughter.

The conversation naturally shifted to marriage and relationships. Hwang Jae-gyun, who is divorced from Jiyeon, was comforted by Shin Dong-yup, who said, "Divorce isn't a crime, and Seo Jang-hoon always says it's 'everyone's story.' One in three couples gets divorced." Hwang nodded in agreement without further comment.

When asked about his ideal type, Hwang reflected on past relationships, saying, "Reactions to my ex-girlfriends varied. Some didn't understand, while others said they were really pretty." He concluded, "Ultimately, I prefer someone attractive and who I'm drawn to, rather than just looks." Son Ah-seop humorously added, "I've seen you date polar opposites. You dated a plain person, then a very sexy one. It seems you don't have a fixed type," adding to the laughter.

Regarding remarriage, Hwang joked, "If this goes out, everything's over for me." When asked if he had considered remarriage, he cautiously revealed, "I really love kids."

Hwang Jae-gyun married Jiyeon in December 2022, but they divorced on November 21, 2024, after nearly two years. At the time, Hwang stated, "Jiyeon and I have decided to divorce after much deliberation due to personality differences. Although our journey as a couple has ended, we will continue to support and cheer for each other's paths." Hwang retired after the 2025 season.
