Running Man's Ji Ye-eun Faces Backlash: A Look into the Controversy

Actress Ji Ye-eun is facing criticism from some viewers after her appearance on the SBS variety show 'Running Man.' Her portrayal of a self-centered 'clueless MZ' character has drawn negative reactions. While some argue that it's merely a concept set by the program, others criticize it as a concept prone to backlash, pointing to a lack of creativity from the production team.
Ji Ye-eun became a regular member of 'Running Man' in December last year, about six months after her initial appearance. Although her addition was initially met with excitement, concerns were raised from the start. Similar to when Jeon So-min joined the show and faced a barrage of negative comments, Ji Ye-eun was also expected to encounter similar challenges.
These concerns have become a reality. Over time, the criticism directed at Ji Ye-eun has intensified. Beyond personal dislike or adaptation issues, dissatisfaction with the production's direction and the show's planning is being directed at Ji Ye-eun.

Ji Ye-eun lacks extensive variety show experience and isn't particularly strong physically. She has shown a familiarity with food-related content, which aligns with the recent 'food-centric' shift in 'Running Man,' making her a target of criticism. However, many argue that the level of personal attacks against her is excessive. The negative comments have extended beyond her character to her appearance, personality, and speech.

She was also criticized for using regular utensils while giving disposable ones to her guests and for sticking to her taste despite a member's comment about the food being too salty. Some viewers felt she appeared 'excessively like an MZ.'
On social media, reactions about Ji Ye-eun included comments about her 'lack of sense' and 'lack of consideration.' However, there are also voices defending her, arguing that variety shows are performed according to a concept and script, and it's unfair for Ji Ye-eun to bear the responsibility alone. Given that the show's concept might have been pre-determined, some argue that the production team also holds responsibility.

Some suggest that the production team should listen to viewer feedback and respond accordingly. This controversy is viewed as an example of the complex issues 'Running Man' is facing, including a decline in creativity and identity confusion. It's a time for deeper reflection on both protecting cast members and the show's direction.
