Legendary Marathoner Lee Bong-ju Shares Battle with Rare Disease on 'You Quiz on the Block'

Legendary marathoner Lee Bong-ju opened up about his battle with a rare disease on the latest episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block'.

The 303rd episode, aired on the 23rd, featured Lee Bong-ju alongside Kim Mi-young, the head of the product planning team at the National Museum of Korea, and correctional officers Kim Hye-jung and Do Yoo-jin from Cheongju Women's Correctional Institution.

Lee Bong-ju, celebrated for completing the full marathon distance of 42.195 km a remarkable 41 times, is a revered figure in South Korea's marathon history. Known for his appearance on the 'Ugly Friends Introduction' segment, Lee brought laughter by donning the same traditional Korean attire that made headlines during his previous appearance. When host Yoo Jae-suk asked who he considered his rival during the segment, Lee humorously pointed to Yoo himself, sharing amusing anecdotes from the show.

Holding the unbroken record for the fastest marathon time in South Korea for 25 years, Lee shared various stories from his athletic career, including his love story with his wife, whom he fell for at first sight. He also revealed behind-the-scenes details of their grand wedding, which was held at the Jamsil Main Stadium.

Lee Bong-ju was diagnosed with a rare condition known as 'muscle dystonia' and reflected on the past four years, describing them as a journey through hell due to his inability to control his body. He expressed deep gratitude to his wife for her unwavering support, which helped him overcome the disease.
