Lee Jong-suk's much-anticipated return to the small screen has kicked off with a promising start. His new drama 'Seocho-dong' premiered last week, achieving a 5% viewership rating, effectively breaking tvN's recent streak of underwhelming performances.

Earlier this year, tvN dramas struggled, with 'Ask the Stars' ending with a disappointing 2.6% rating despite a hefty 50 billion won production budget. Subsequent shows like 'Potato Research Institute' and 'Divorce Insurance' also floundered with ratings in the 1% range.

However, the tide turned with the success of 'Someday Wise Resident Life' and 'Unknown Seoul,' and now 'Seocho-dong' is continuing this positive trend with its 5% rating.

'Seocho-dong' follows the daily lives and growth of five associate lawyers working in the bustling Seocho-dong legal district. Unlike typical courtroom dramas, it focuses more on the everyday interactions and emotions of these characters rather than legal battles.

The supporting cast is also solid, featuring actors like Kang Yoo-seok, who gained attention from Netflix's 'The Glory' and 'Someday Wise Resident Life,' alongside Moon Ga-young, Ryu Hye-young, Lim Sung-jae, and Yum Hye-ran. The casting has been praised for its strength and cohesion.

Lee Jong-suk is undoubtedly the main draw. This marks his first drama in three years since MBC's 'Big Mouth' in 2022. Given his track record of starring in shows that consistently achieve over 10% ratings, expectations were high for 'Seocho-dong.' Industry insiders often say, "If Lee Jong-suk is in it, the drama is at least a moderate success."

The initial ratings are promising, though some viewers express disappointment that Lee Jong-suk is once again playing a lawyer, similar to his role in 'Big Mouth.' Despite the different tone and genre, the character's profession feels familiar, leading to some mixed reactions.

As the series is still in its early stages, there is potential for growth. Episode 3 will see the beginning of a romance with Moon Ga-young's character, which could boost the show's momentum. All eyes are on how 'Seocho-dong' will unfold in the coming episodes.
