Squid Game Season 3: The Final Chapter Unveiled

'Squid Game' concludes its five-year journey with the finale of Season 3. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk and the cast spoke cautiously about the new season, emphasizing the show's focus on humanity.

On the 9th, a production presentation for Netflix's original series 'Squid Game 3' was held at the Seoul Dragon City Hotel in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, along with actors Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Wi Ha-jun, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-shim, Cho Yu-ri, Chae Gook-hee, Lee David, and Noh Jae-won attended.

'Squid Game 3' follows Gi-hun, who returns to the game with his own motives, only to lose his closest friend. It also explores the fate of the Front Man, who hid his identity, and the survivors of the brutal game. Following Season 1 in September 2021 and Season 2 in December 2024, the final Season 3 is set to premiere.

Director Hwang described Season 3 as a story about Gi-hun's journey from guilt and despair after losing most of his allies to finding a way to rise again. He highlighted the conflict between Gi-hun and the Front Man over their beliefs in humanity. Hwang expressed his desire to pose questions rather than provide answers, exploring themes of excessive competition in a post-capitalist society and the potential for a better future.

'Squid Game' is known for its ironic transformation of innocent childhood games into deadly matches. Regarding the games in Season 3, Hwang mentioned a game involving crossing a high bridge and another where participants are chased by cars in a maze-like space. He hinted at elements of tag, hide-and-seek, and cops and robbers, along with new games.

Hwang shared that it took about six years to create the series, dedicating significant time and effort. He expressed disbelief at the show's success and cherished the experiences, including international recognition and meeting fans abroad. Hwang emphasized the importance of not getting lost in the success and using the experiences to prepare for future projects.

Lee Jung-jae plays Gi-hun, participant 456, who returns to end the game after winning three years ago. He initiates a rebellion with other participants but is deeply affected by the death of his close friend, Jung-bae. Lee described Gi-hun's transformation and his evolving motivations in Season 3.

Lee Byung-hun portrays the Front Man, who infiltrated the game as Young-il. He plans to dismantle Gi-hun's belief in humanity. Lee explained that Season 3 serves as the climax and conclusion of the story, focusing on the intense conflict between the Front Man and Gi-hun.

Im Si-wan plays Myung-ki, who encounters his pregnant ex-girlfriend Jun-hee in the game, leading to confusion. He hinted at Myung-ki's cunning nature and the challenges he faces due to his own schemes.

Cho Yu-ri portrays Jun-hee, who begins to open up to those offering help. Despite facing hardships, she is set to demonstrate strong mental resilience.

Kang Ha-neul plays Dae-ho, who experiences trauma from a failed rebellion and starts avoiding Gi-hun. He described Dae-ho's reactions as realistic and expressed confidence in his portrayal.

Lee Jin-wook plays Kyung-seok, who was shot by a Pink Guard during the rebellion. He teased the audience about Kyung-seok's fate and potential role in the game.

Park Sung-hoon plays Hyun-joo, who experiences setbacks during the rebellion. He described Hyun-joo as inherently righteous and altruistic, showcasing camaraderie with fellow participants.

Wi Ha-jun plays Jun-ho, who tracks the game's island location to find his brother In-ho. He hinted at Jun-ho's determination and the challenges he faces, including interactions with Captain Park.

Park Gyu-young plays No-eul, Pink Guard 11, known for her sharpshooting skills. She teased an intensified struggle for No-eul in Season 3.

Yang Dong-geun and Kang Ae-shim portray the mother-son duo Yong-sik and Geum-ja. Yang hinted at the evolving situation rather than their relationship, while Kang expressed admiration for Yang and anticipation for their storyline.

Noh Jae-won plays Nam-kyu, who relies on drugs stolen from the deceased Thanos to survive the game. He teased the audience about Nam-kyu's interactions with Min-soo and his role in the game.

Lee David plays Min-soo, who is deeply affected by the death of his only confidante, Sae-mi. He hinted at Min-soo's desperation and the conflicts arising from his relationship with Nam-kyu.

Chae Gook-hee plays a shaman character, predicting the success of Season 3 with humor.

The cast expressed their unique connection to the globally successful 'Squid Game.' Lee Jung-jae appreciated the diverse support from fans and the opportunity to communicate through the series. Lee Byung-hun reflected on the overwhelming support during Season 2 promotions and anticipated further international promotions for Season 3.

Lee Byung-hun emphasized the show's exploration of humanity's absence and its universal themes that resonate globally.

During Season 2's release, Park Sung-hoon and Park Gyu-young faced controversies over social media posts. Director Hwang acknowledged the incidents but considered them minor and not significantly affecting the audience's enjoyment.

Regarding the possibility of a Season 4, Director Hwang stated there are no plans for it. He mentioned the potential for spin-offs, driven by curiosity and the creative process.

'Squid Game 3' will be available on Netflix on the 27th.
