Shin Dong-yup Faces Backlash for Inappropriate Remarks on 'Jjanhyung'

Shin Dong-yup, the host of the web variety show 'Jjanhyung,' has come under fire for making inappropriate remarks. During the episode aired on the 17th, Shin asked actors promoting the MBC drama 'Undercover High School' about their circumcision status, which many found distasteful. The situation was further criticized for creating an uncomfortable atmosphere, especially with a young female among middle-aged men.

In the episode, actor Seo Kang-joon revealed his real name is Lee Seung-hwan and discussed the origin of his stage name. He explained that he chose 'Seo Kang-joon' based on a superstition that using the name of a successful actor's manager would bring success. In response, Jung Ho-chul jokingly said he would use the name of Shin Dong-yup's manager, Kwon Yong-nam.

The conversation then turned to the playful suggestion of the stage name 'Jeong Po-cheol,' with Yoon Ga-i humorously proposing 'Po Yong-nam.' However, Shin Dong-yup abruptly mentioned 'porgyungseon' (a term related to circumcision), causing actor Jo Bok-rae to appear visibly uncomfortable. Seo Kang-joon teased Jo Bok-rae, asking why he wasn't laughing and if he was spaced out.

Shin acknowledged that such jokes could be uncomfortable but then proceeded to ask Jo Bok-rae if he was circumcised, adding, "Did you do it when you were grown up?" Jo Bok-rae replied that he had it done as a child, to which Shin commented, "You must be rich."

During the conversation, someone asked, "Who here isn't circumcised?" Yoon Ga-i, the only female participant, raised her hand, stating, "Biologically, I can't." Some viewers criticized the conversation, noting that it was inappropriate given the presence of a young woman among older men.

Later, Shin indirectly questioned Seo Kang-joon about a vasectomy, referencing a drama episode where Seo said, "I tied it." Seo clarified that he hadn't undergone the procedure.

In a post-credits scene, Seo Kang-joon mentioned that his unique personality might make marriage difficult. Shin interjected with an unrelated comment, "Just say you like men," and added, "I don't understand, but I respect it."

This isn't the first time Shin Dong-yup's remarks have sparked controversy. Last year on 'Jjanhyung,' he made an inappropriate comment about his son and actress Choi Ji-woo, comparing her to Kim Yong-gun in a context that many found offensive.

While Shin Dong-yup is known for his adult humor, recent criticisms suggest his comments have crossed into harassment and disrespect. Despite the actors appearing on 'Jjanhyung' to promote their work, the focus shifted to Shin's inappropriate remarks. Critics argue that such comments are especially concerning on platforms accessible to minors, calling for more caution in his approach.
