Age Gap Sparks Concerns for Upcoming Drama 'Annoying Love' Starring Lee Jung-jae and Lim Ji-yeon

Set to air in the latter half of this year, 'Annoying Love' tells the story of a detective actor (played by Lee Jung-jae) aspiring to become a master of romance, and a journalist (played by Lim Ji-yeon) who is transferred from the political desk to the entertainment section. The drama is a collaboration between writer Jung Yeo-rang, known for 'Doctor Cha Jung-sook,' and director Kim Ga-ram, who directed 'Good Partner.'

Lim Ji-yeon has built a solid career with successful projects like 'The Glory' and 'Lady Oksu's Story,' while Lee Jung-jae has gained international fame through works such as 'Squid Game.' Despite their credentials, the age difference between the two actors raises doubts about the believability of their romance. Even with a talented cast and crew, a significant age gap can make it difficult for audiences to fully engage with the story.

The primary audience for romance dramas is women, who often seek vicarious fulfillment of fantasies through these stories. The success of 'My Perfect Secretary' and 'Run Away with Seon-jae,' featuring actors like Lee Jun-hyuk and Byun Woo-seok, is attributed to their realistic portrayals of romance with peers. Balancing fantasy and reality is crucial, and an 18-year age gap is seen as a barrier to immersion.

As natural chemistry and immersion are vital in romance genres, the age gap between the two leads cannot be overlooked. How 'Annoying Love' will address these concerns and how the production team will handle the direction and storyline remains to be seen.
