Controversy Surrounds 'I Am SOLO' for Alleged Manipulative Editing and Online Harassment

The production style of the South Korean dating reality show 'I Am SOLO,' aired on ENA and SBS Plus, has come under scrutiny once again. This time, the controversy arises from a cast member facing online harassment, with accusations that the producers have exacerbated the issue through manipulative editing.

In the 188th episode, aired on October 12, a scene featuring contestant Young-sik tearfully confessing his feelings to Ok-soon during a drinking session was broadcast. Ok-soon had been chosen by five men, excluding Kwang-soo, for a 5:1 date. During this date, Young-sik read a prepared confession from his phone, his voice trembling with emotion, eventually breaking into tears. His voice cracked, and the other contestants present remained silent. Following the broadcast, Young-sik's emotional display became a target of ridicule on social media.

From the beginning of the 24th season, it appeared that the producers aimed to make Young-sik a focal point, using his tearful scene in previews to attract viewer interest.

The strategy seemed to work, as viewers began leaving harsh comments on Young-sik's social media, mocking him for scenes where he appeared to speak with saliva at the corners of his mouth, calling it "foaming at the mouth."

Young-sik, who works as a civil servant, eventually posted an apology on his Instagram story on October 13. He explained, "I was emotionally exhausted and had been drinking makgeolli, which led to an emotional outburst," adding that he is reflecting on and improving his behavior. He also pleaded for restraint from excessive criticism, stating, "Please refrain from treating me like a criminal or stalker. It's very difficult."

The public backlash seems to stem from the producers airing Young-sik's awkward moments without restraint.

While Young-sik may have some awkward traits, the editing choices that highlighted these aspects appear to have fueled negative public opinion. Critics question whether the producers have any regard for the contestants' dignity or if they are solely focused on generating buzz.

'I Am SOLO' faced similar criticism during its 19th season, which featured a special on individuals who had never dated. At that time, contestant Young-chul made controversial remarks about another contestant, Young-sook, which were aired without editing. His burping during a date was also left uncut, becoming a subject of mockery on social media.

Contestants likely join 'I Am SOLO' with serious intentions of finding a marriage partner. However, the producers' approach of portraying contestants in a humorous light has sparked controversy.

If the producers continue to prioritize sensationalism over the contestants' image and mental well-being, 'I Am SOLO' risks following in the footsteps of other reality shows that have faced backlash. As non-celebrity participation in reality TV increases, there is a growing need for producers to take responsibility for protecting their contestants.
