tvN's 'Jeong Nyeoni' Faces Legal Battle with MBC Over Alleged Contract Breach

On the 10th, a press conference for tvN's new weekend drama 'Jeong Nyeoni' was held at Conrad Seoul Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, attended by actors Kim Tae-ri, Shin Ye-eun, Ra Mi-ran, Jung Eun-chae, Kim Yoon-hye, and director Jung Ji-in.
tvN's 'Jeong Nyeoni' is a drama set in the 1950s, post-Korean War, depicting the competition, solidarity, and brilliant growth of 'Jeong Nyeoni,' a 'born sound genius' aspiring to become the top national drama actor.
Kim Tae-ri perfectly transforms into 'Yoon Jeong Nyeoni,' a sound genius who comes to Seoul alone from Mokpo to become a national drama actor. Shin Ye-eun plays 'Heo Young-seo,' a super-elite researcher with solid skills in singing, dancing, and acting, backed by a strong family background. Ra Mi-ran portrays 'Kang So-bok,' the head of the Maeran National Drama Troupe, while Jung Eun-chae plays 'Moon Ok-kyung,' the star of the troupe, and Kim Yoon-hye takes on the role of 'Seo Hye-rang.'
Previously, MBC filed a provisional seizure application against the production companies of tvN's drama 'Jeong Nyeoni.' MBC stated, "Based on 'unfair competition prevention law violation due to unauthorized use of work results and damages claim due to unfair breach of contract negotiations,' we applied for provisional seizure of the production company's assets, and the court fully accepted our claim on September 10, 2024."
In response, the production company stated, "'Jeong Nyeoni' is a work planned and developed under the initiative of the production companies, bearing all costs (without receiving a single won from MBC). MBC delayed production cost negotiations despite repeated requests from the production companies until the filming was imminent, forcing the production company to comply with MBC's unreasonable conditions." They claimed that MBC is maliciously trying to tarnish the work by filing a lawsuit just before the broadcast of 'Jeong Nyeoni.'
Director Jung Ji-in commented, "I understand there are unresolved issues," adding, "I am not aware of the specific issues. I am relieved that the broadcast can proceed smoothly, and I think we prioritized the work. I am glad to communicate with the actors we have worked with and ensure a safe broadcast."
Regarding the adaptation of the 'Buyongi' character from the original work, which was omitted in the drama, he explained, "There was a concern about the 'Buyongi' character even before I joined. We were in a situation where we had to decide, and after consulting with the original author, we had to focus on various relationships and themes to convey to the viewers in a 12-episode series, leading to the unfortunate decision to delete the character."
tvN's 'Jeong Nyeoni' will premiere on October 12th (Saturday) at 9:20 PM.
