Trot Singer Dongdeok: Bridging Traditional Korean Arts and Modern Trot
Dongdeok (real name Lee Dong-deok) has been gaining traction with the title track 'Oltaguna' from his single album released last October, along with 'Haneul Arirang,' which features traditional Korean music melodies.
Born in 1981, Dongdeok grew up in a family of artists encompassing female national drama and film direction. His late grandfather, Lee Il-pa, was the first director and journalist of female national drama, and his late aunt, Lee Gun-ja, was the head of the Korean Women's National Drama Art Troupe, beloved in her time. His late father, Lee Il-mok, was known for directing films such as 'Sirasuni,' 'Hwi Mori,' and 'Karuna.'
Raised by his aunt, Dongdeok naturally learned Korean dance, percussion, and traditional music, building a solid foundation over 30 years on stage. He made a mark on the public by performing Korean dance to the tune of 'Seongju Puri' on KBS 1TV's 'National Singing Contest.' In 2018, he ventured into the trot genre, which he loves most.
Dongdeok recalls enduring his late-blooming rookie days with the longing for his father and aunt, who passed away after battling cancer. He expressed, “I want to sing for my father and aunt, whom I miss and feel sorry for,” adding, “I want to repay the comfort and applause I received on stage as a child with good songs that bring joy and emotion.”
The music industry is watching closely to see if Dongdeok, an artist with deep-rooted artistic heritage and extensive stage experience, can serve as a bridge between traditional arts and trot.
