As baseball's popularity continues to rise, the sport is increasingly being integrated into music concepts. Known for its energetic and approachable nature, baseball is emerging as a fresh theme in K-pop.

NOWZ is set to make a comeback on the 26th with their third single, 'Play Ball,' after a four-month hiatus. Ahead of the release, they unveiled concept photos featuring the members in an all-black ensemble of baseball caps and jackets against a locker room backdrop, exuding charisma. The group is also seen sitting on a bench, ready to take the field.

Previously, NOWZ gave fans a sneak peek of their new title track's performance during an overseas concert. The song is characterized by its intense EDM sound, with choreography that mimics baseball actions, such as swinging a bat and running towards bases. On the 16th, they attended the second game of JTBC's 'Strongest Baseball' at Gocheok Sky Dome, aligning their public appearances with the baseball theme.

There are some critiques regarding the timing of the song's release, as the domestic baseball season has already concluded. In contrast, Dragon Pony released 'Not Out' in March, coinciding with the start of the professional baseball season, which amplified its impact. Dragon Pony engaged directly with baseball fans through tailgating performances and ceremonial first pitches. Critics suggest that NOWZ could have maximized their concept's effectiveness by aligning their release with peak baseball season.

This year has seen other artists also embracing baseball themes. In July, Infinite's Nam Woo-hyun transformed into a baseball player in the music video for 'Only Forward.' Dressed in a blue uniform, he throws a fastball and celebrates. The song conveys a message of moving straight towards love. Nam Woo-hyun explained on a web variety show hosted by EXO's Xiumin that the thrill of striking out with a fastball inspired the baseball concept for the music video, enhancing the song's message.

Using sports as an album concept is not new, but with baseball's growing popularity across various age groups, it's natural for idol groups to adopt baseball themes. If timed well, these concepts could garner even more attention.
