Rising Star Baek Se-ra Shines in Controversial Drama 'Doctor Shin'
Baek Se-ra stars in TV Chosun's weekend drama 'Doctor Shin', directed by Lee Seung-hoon. Written by Im Sung-han, known as the 'queen of makjang', the show is a medical thriller melodrama about a genius doctor and the events following an accident involving his beloved.
In her debut acting role, Baek Se-ra plays the character Momo, a top actress who becomes a central figure in the drama's shocking 'brain change' plot after an accident leaves her in a vegetative state. This challenging role requires Baek Se-ra to portray different personalities while maintaining Momo's physical presence.
Initially, Baek Se-ra skillfully depicted Momo as a poised and perfect star, while subtly revealing the loneliness and vulnerability beneath her glamorous facade. This nuanced performance helped build a natural emotional connection with the character Shin Ju-shin, played by Jung Yi-chan.
Baek Se-ra's presence became more pronounced after the first brain change. Following Shin Ju-shin's decision to transplant the brain of Momo's mother, Hyun Ran-hee (played by Song Ji-in), into Momo, Baek Se-ra had to embody a completely different character. Despite the shocking premise, she convincingly portrayed Hyun Ran-hee's manipulative and seductive nature towards her son-in-law.
The multi-layered structure of playing 'someone pretending to be Momo' is considered one of the most challenging aspects of the show. However, Baek Se-ra has been praised for her ability to distinctly alter her speech, habits, and expressions with each character change, delivering a complex performance with relative stability.
Initially, some viewers expressed concern that Im Sung-han's work might be too intense for a debut role. However, as the series progresses, Baek Se-ra is proving her potential as an actress, using the unique premise to her advantage.
Im Sung-han is known for her provocative storylines but has a history of introducing new actors like Lim Soo-hyang, Park Ha-na, and Jeon So-min to the public. With only four episodes left until 'Doctor Shin' concludes, there is growing interest in whether Baek Se-ra will emerge as another breakout star from Im Sung-han's work.
