Musical Actress Kim Sun-young Discusses the Unique Challenges of 'Lempicka'
On the morning of the 16th, Kim Sun-young, who is currently starring in the musical 'Lempicka', was interviewed at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
The musical numbers in 'Lempicka' are uniquely composed, blending modern pop, rock, and R&B elements. However, some audience members have described them as "abstract."
In response, Kim Sun-young, with a knowing smile, admitted, "Among ourselves, we often say that no role in this production is easy."
She explained, "The numbers should connect the actors, but suddenly lyrics like 'flat line form', 'your bones', and 'your flesh' appear, making it challenging to stay immersed."
Kim Sun-young further noted, "Although I've grown accustomed to it, actors playing the role of Lempicka still find it difficult, often laughing when such lyrics come up." She added, "We joke that if you lose focus for a moment, you're in another world."
She continued, "Even when actors are exchanging intense emotions, we have to deliver lines like 'intense curve' and 'metallic skin', which is tough, but staying focused is the only way."
Despite these challenges, Kim Sun-young expressed, "This seems to be the artistic world of Tamara de Lempicka. Director Matt Gould intended this, so as an actress playing Tamara, it's crucial to express these difficult lyrics well."
'Lempicka' tells the story of the real-life artist Tamara de Lempicka, who maintained her artistic identity amidst the Russian Revolution and World Wars. It portrays her intense journey of discovering her artistic self and true identity. The musical runs until June 21 at the COEX Artium in Seoul.
