K-Pop Star Cha Eun-woo Faces Military Position Scrutiny Amid $20 Million Tax Evasion Allegations
Recently, an online community revealed that a complaint was filed demanding a review of Private Lee Dong-min's suitability for his position in the military band.
The complaint was submitted through the National Petition Board, requesting a reconsideration of his military band assignment.
According to the complaint, the petitioner argued, "The military band is a position frequently exposed to external events and promotional activities, impacting the military's symbolism and public trust. It is necessary to reassess whether it is appropriate for someone involved in a significant social controversy to maintain this position."
The petitioner further urged the Ministry of National Defense to consider that maintaining the position of a specific individual could lead to a sense of relative deprivation and morale decline among active-duty soldiers who serve under strict standards.
The Ministry of National Defense previously stated regarding the initial complaint, "Military positions are comprehensively determined within the scope of command authority according to the Military Personnel Act and related regulations. Currently, there is no discussion or decision regarding a change in the individual's position." They also clarified that requests for fact-finding related to tax controversies are not subject to investigation unless they involve service-related misconduct.
If Cha Eun-woo's tax evasion occurred before his enlistment, the matter is classified as civilian and not directly related to the military. However, disciplinary action for violating the duty to maintain dignity and image as a soldier may be considered.
Meanwhile, on October 8, Cha Eun-woo posted a lengthy apology on his Instagram, stating, "I sincerely apologize for causing disappointment and confusion to fans and many others due to the recent tax controversy involving me."
He added, "I respect the procedures and results of the National Tax Service and have paid all related taxes to prevent further confusion. I will also diligently comply with the remaining procedures."
