Musical Couple Kim Woo-hyung and Kim Sun-young Share Their Experience Reuniting on Stage in 'Lempicka'
Musical theater couple Kim Woo-hyung and Kim Sun-young express their thoughts on reuniting on stage in 'Lempicka' after their previous collaboration in 'Hadestown'.

On the afternoon of the 26th, a press call for the musical 'Lempicka' (directed by Kim Tae-hoon) was held at the Woori Bank Hall in Coex Artium, Samseong-dong. The event was attended by composer Matt Gould, playwright Carson Kreitzer, and actors Jo Hyung-kyun, Kim Sun-young, Park Hye-na, Lina, Son Seung-yeon, Kim Woo-hyung, Kim Min-cheol, and Kim Hye-mi.

'Lempicka' is based on the true story of Tamara de Lempicka, an artist who maintained her artistic identity amidst the turmoil of the Russian Revolution and World Wars. The musical portrays her bold journey of self-discovery and artistic expression, starting with painting as a means of survival.

Kim Sun-young plays the role of 'Tamara de Lempicka', while Kim Woo-hyung takes on the role of 'Tadeusz Lempicka'. Kim Woo-hyung shared his thoughts on working with his wife in the same production, saying, "We usually choose different projects to avoid attention, but this one was a tough decision. We don't usually discuss work at home, but this time we communicated constantly."

He added, "Personally, I'm grateful we can work together," and shared an update on his wife's condition. "Sun-young suffered an injury late last year and is still in rehabilitation. As an actor and husband, I'm thankful I can support her," he said, showing his caring side.

Kim Sun-young, moved by her husband's words, expressed her gratitude, saying, "I feel like crying." She recalled, "We had many concerns about this project. The intense portrayal of a real couple's conflict made us worry about revealing personal matters on stage."

She continued, "Meeting as a couple on stage to create a dense and intricate work is a joy. I believe we can share positive energy with the audience, which led us to decide to perform together."

The couple found this project to be one of the most challenging in their musical careers. Kim Woo-hyung mentioned, "We discussed extensively how to enhance the performance and express our acting nuances. We even rented a practice room near our home to rehearse and run through the show together, preparing intensely."

The musical 'Lempicka' will be performed at Coex Artium in Seoul until June 21.
