Eric Dane, Beloved 'Grey's Anatomy' Star, Passes Away at 53 After Battle with ALS

Eric Dane, the American actor best known for his role in 'Grey's Anatomy,' has passed away at the age of 53.

According to reports from local media on the 19th, Dane's family released a statement saying, "Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS."

The family shared, "He spent his final moments surrounded by loving friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. During his illness, he was passionate about raising awareness and supporting research for ALS, striving to be a source of strength for others facing the same battle."

They added, "He was always grateful for the love and support from his fans," and requested privacy as the family navigates this difficult time.

Eric Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April of last year. At the time, he expressed gratitude for having his family by his side during this new journey, which garnered much support from the public. He actively participated in legislative and fundraising activities for patients, although he was unable to attend the Emmy Awards last September due to health issues.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a rare degenerative disease that causes muscle paralysis as motor neurons gradually deteriorate. There is currently no cure, and treatment focuses on slowing the progression of symptoms.

Born in 1972, Eric Dane rose to international fame for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, a plastic surgeon, in the medical drama 'Grey's Anatomy,' earning the nickname 'McSteamy.' He continued to showcase his talent in popular series like 'The Last Ship' and 'Euphoria,' as well as films such as 'Bad Boys for Life.'

Colleagues and fans are expressing their condolences and paying tribute to him on social media.
