Korean Entertainer Ahn Sun-young Faces Backlash Over Cosmetic Surgery Remarks
On October 18, Ahn Sun-young uploaded a video titled 'Recommended vs. Not Recommended Procedures I've Done So Far' on her personal YouTube channel, 'This is Ahn Sun-young.'
In the video, Ahn stated, "There are commonalities between houses, cars, and women. These days, it's the same for men, but let's say people," adding, "The commonality is that as they age, the maintenance costs increase." She further commented, "No matter how much you clean and polish, it's unsightly until you repair it."
She continued, "Some might say I'm bragging, but due to the nature of my job, I think it's necessary to invest about 5-10% of my income into my body," explaining, "Depreciation happens, so there's no choice but to reinvest to keep working with this face."
While her intention was to emphasize the need for maintenance as a celebrity, the online reaction has been mixed. Some praised her honesty, calling it "cool" and "informative," while others criticized her for comparing women to objects, deeming it inappropriate.
The core of the controversy lies in her analogy of women's appearances to 'age' and 'maintenance costs.' Some netizens argue that her remarks seem to limit women's value to their looks and upkeep expenses. Additionally, her comment about being "unsightly until repaired" has raised concerns about reinforcing appearance-centric thinking.
As the controversy grew, the channel's production team deleted some critical comments. They explained, "We are removing content that the guest might find offensive." As a result, comments criticizing Ahn's remarks are now hard to find.
Meanwhile, Ahn Sun-young, a comedian-turned-actress, has appeared in shows like 'Love of Cha Dal-rae's Wife' and 'Erotic Couple Who Wants to Get Hot Again.'
