Chef Kim Sung-woon on 'Black and White Chef 2': From Culinary Battles to Casual Dining
Recently, I met Chef Kim Sung-woon at Table Four Four in Hannam-dong, Seoul, where he shared behind-the-scenes stories from 'Black and White Chef 2' and updates on his life.
Chef Kim, a 'White Spoon' contestant, finished in a tie for 8th place. Leading the Italian restaurant 'Table Four Four' and Korean pub 'Pocha Po Four', he embodies his Taean identity through dishes using seasonal seafood and local ingredients. On the show, he highlighted his focus on regional ingredients and authentic cooking style, adding a touch of reality to the program.
Chef Kim's long hair left a strong impression on viewers, though it wasn't a deliberate choice. Unable to contact his hairstylist of six years, his hair grew out. "I tend to stick to one place once I decide on it," he said. "I found a nearby salon, and the stylist suggested keeping the current style. However, I plan to cut it short by summer."
Chef Kim was eliminated, while Chef Choi went on to win. Reflecting on his elimination, Kim said, "I left with a smile, feeling liberated rather than defeated." He added, "I looked forward to enjoying soju with friends and cooking in my kitchen without the fear of another mission."
After the competition, Kim and Choi grew closer, especially after filming a YouTube episode at Kim's new venue. Choi congratulated Kim on his opening with a gift of alcohol. "We bonded over drinks, and it's not awkward anymore," Kim laughed.
Kim intended the pub as a personal 'hideout' for gatherings. "I love socializing and sharing seasonal ingredients," he said. "We used to meet at my house, but my wife and dog were not thrilled. Now, chefs visit late at night, and it's great. It's close to home, so no worries about drinking and driving."
While other 'Black and White Chef' participants engage in various media activities, Kim has no plans for further TV appearances. "I'm preparing my own YouTube channel," he revealed.
Kim's YouTube venture aims to capture his extensive network and pop-up events. "I've already hosted a kimbap pop-up and have more planned for April and May," he said. "These opportunities are rare, and I want to document them, even if it means funding it myself."
The final mission on 'Black and White Chef 2' was to create 'the one dish for oneself.' Kim chose 'sundae soup,' sharing a childhood memory. "There's a small sundae alley in Taean. As a child, I always asked my mom for sundae when she went to the market. I still love sundae soup," he smiled.
