Koo Jun-yup's Decision to Forfeit Inheritance Sparks Legal Debate in Taiwan

According to ET Today, Taiwanese lawyers have stated that Koo's decision to forfeit the inheritance is not feasible. They explained that under Taiwanese law, the primary heirs to Barbie Hsu's estate are Koo and her two children. If Koo renounces his share, the inheritance would be equally divided between the two children, leaving Hsu's mother with nothing.
The lawyers advised that Koo should legally accept his share of the inheritance and then transfer it to Hsu's mother. However, they noted that this process could incur significant gift taxes.
Meanwhile, Koo has vowed to protect Barbie Hsu's family and children from her ex-husband, Wang Xiaofei (42). On social media, Koo stated, "The inheritance was accumulated by Hsu through her hard work to protect her beloved family, and I intend to give my share to my mother-in-law." He also mentioned taking legal steps to ensure that the children's inheritance is safeguarded until they reach adulthood.
Koo criticized Wang Xiaofei and his family, saying, "Even before the mourning period for our great loss has passed, malicious individuals have begun to slander our family and my love." He added, "Some pretend to be sad, walking in the rain, while others spread false news about insurance and expenses to harm our family."
Previously, Wang Xiaofei was seen walking in the rain without an umbrella upon returning to Taiwan after hearing of Hsu's death on March 3. False reports also circulated that Wang's mother covered the funeral costs in Japan and the charter flight to Taiwan.
Barbie Hsu passed away on February 2 due to acute pneumonia caused by the flu while on a family trip to Japan for the Lunar New Year. She was cremated in Japan, and her estate is estimated to be worth approximately 600 million yuan (120 billion won).
Barbie Hsu married Wang Xiaofei in 2011 and had a son and a daughter with him. They divorced in November 2021 after ten years of marriage. She later married Koo Jun-yup on February 8, 2022.
