Lee Je-hoon “I’m learning North Korean accent these days”
On the 20th, Lee Je-hoon was interviewed about the movie 'Escape' at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and told various stories.
'Escape' depicts the breathless chase between Gyu-nam, a North Korean soldier who crosses the line between life and death and races towards life on the other side of the barbed wire fence in the demilitarized zone, and Hyeon-sang, a North Korean security department officer who must stop him.
Lee Je-hoon gave a passionate performance in the role of Gyu-nam, a North Korean soldier who began his escape for tomorrow. He engages in a rough chase with Gu Gyo-hwan. Gyu-nam's strong will to escape North Korea, despite passing through minefields, rolling in muddy water, and getting shot, was revealed through his intense eyes and energy.
On this day, Lee Je-hoon played the role of a North Korean soldier, so he had to imitate the North Korean accent. In response, he said, "I actually received thorough lessons from a friend who defected from North Korea by crossing the DMZ. I also watched a lot of North Korea-related movies and dramas, so I thought I would be able to express it without difficulty if I followed along well. But the person who taught me was the person who saw North Korea in the media." “They said I had to give up all my speaking style, and I learned the speaking style and intonation that North Korean people in their 20s use these days.”
He continued, "Usually, after filming a scene, I look at the director, but this time, I looked at the friend who gave me the lesson. If the friend confirmed and said OK, I moved on. In 'Escape', you can see the North Korean speaking style used by young people rather than the North Korean speaking style that you usually see. “There is,” he said.
