Former ARIAZ member Hyokyung has shed light on the 'Sugar Daddy' phenomenon within the entertainment industry. A 'Sugar Daddy' refers to a man who provides financial support to a younger woman in exchange for companionship or a relationship.
Hyokyung recently released a video on her YouTube channel titled 'As a Former K-Pop Idol, Let's Talk About Sugar Daddies.' In the video, she candidly stated, "Do Sugar Daddies exist in K-Pop? To be honest, yes." She added, "During my time as an idol, I witnessed chaotic situations. It's not about the major agencies you might be thinking of."
According to Hyokyung, a particular member was rumored to be in a relationship with her agency's CEO despite a significant age difference. She noted, "For some reason, this member, who wasn't particularly talented, always got the most parts and stood at the center," explaining that such rumors were widespread in the industry.
Hyokyung also shared instances involving idol trainees and rookie actors. She recounted an incident where a friend, who had been eliminated as a trainee, faced an inappropriate situation after being summoned by an agency official. "My friend managed to leave by calling her parents, but she gave up on becoming an idol afterward," Hyokyung recalled. "There were other reasons, but she felt disillusioned with the entire K-Pop scene. I still remember her expression, as if someone's dreams were being exploited."
As the revelations sparked controversy online, Hyokyung posted an additional video on the 2nd, clarifying that the issue was unrelated to her former agency.
Hyokyung gained recognition in 2017 by finishing 8th on JTBC's 'Mix Nine.' She debuted with the group ARIAZ under Star Empire's label Rising Entertainment in October 2019 but concluded her activities in April 2022.
