TV personality Jang Young-ran has reflected on her past parenting approach, where she used her children as a means to showcase her own achievements.

On the October 7th episode of tvN STORY's 'Lee Ho-sun Counseling Center,' counselor Lee Ho-sun, TV personality Jang Young-ran, and actor In Gyo-jin discussed child education. The episode focused on 'Distorted Maternal and Paternal Instincts That Ruin Children,' exploring the proper roles of parents.

Lee Ho-sun shared a personal story from his fourth-grade year, highlighting his mother's dedication. He recalled, "I fractured my foot during gym class, and my mother carried me to and from school for a month and a half." Despite being smaller in stature and having knee issues due to her age, his mother showed no signs of struggle. Lee described this as "unchanging love and patience of motherhood."

Lee also mentioned the 'mirror mom' type of parent, where a parent's strong self-love is projected onto their child, treating them like a trophy. He shared a story of a parent who pressured their child to the point of refusing meals when the child's grades dropped after entering a prestigious school. Lee explained, "If a child focuses solely on pleasing their parents and others, they eventually lose their own identity."

Listening to the discussion, Jang Young-ran admitted she fell into this category. She shared her experience of sending her child to an English kindergarten at age five to overcome her own English complex. Jang confessed, "I had an obsession that my child shouldn't be like me, struggling with English," and added, "I felt more pride seeing my child with a kindergarten backpack than owning a designer bag."

However, after noticing her child's physical pain and fatigue, Jang changed her educational approach. She stated, "I started teaching my child their native language slowly, realizing I was unknowingly treating them like a trophy." Her child is reportedly grateful to Jang for listening to them during that time.
