Musical Actor Jo Hyung-kyun Shares Challenges of Performing in Asian Premiere of 'Lempicka'
Musical actor Jo Hyung-kyun opened up about the challenges of performing in the Asian premiere of 'Lempicka'.

On the afternoon of the 26th, a press call for the musical 'Lempicka' (directed by Kim Tae-hoon) was held at the Woori Bank Hall in Coex Artium, Samseong-dong. The event was attended by composer Matt Gould, playwright Carson Kreitzer, and actors Jo Hyung-kyun, Kim Sun-young, Park Hye-na, Lina, Son Seung-yeon, Kim Woo-hyung, Kim Min-chul, and Kim Hye-mi.

'Lempicka' is based on the true story of Tamara de Lempicka, a real-life figure who maintained her artistic identity amidst the tumultuous times of the Russian Revolution and World Wars. The artist Lempicka began painting as a means of survival and gradually embarked on a bold journey to discover her artistic self and true identity.

Jo Hyung-kyun, now in his 19th year as an actor, experienced unfamiliar emotions upon encountering this work. Playing the role of Marinetti, he plays a crucial part in controlling the tempo of the play. Jo recalled, "At the beginning of rehearsals, it was very difficult. I wondered, 'What is this? How should I sing it?'"

He continued, "It seemed like rap, but not just simple rap. There were many words in front of me, but they didn't come together. The music kept flowing, but I couldn't grasp it, which left me feeling disoriented and embarrassed."

Jo added, "I realized that the answer to this work lies within the music, so I entrusted myself to it. As I continued to practice, I began to feel that I could persuade the audience, which motivated me to intensify my rehearsals."

Meanwhile, the musical 'Lempicka' will be performed at Coex Artium in Seoul until June 21.
