On the October 22nd episode of TV Chosun's 'Baekban Journey', Im Chang-jung's wife, Seo Ha-yan, made a surprise appearance and shared the story of how her family strongly opposed her marriage to Im Chang-jung, who is 18 years her senior and was previously divorced.
The episode featured singer and actor Im Chang-jung as a guest.
How Did Im Chang-jung and Seo Ha-yan First Meet?
During the broadcast, Seo Ha-yan recounted her first encounter with Im Chang-jung, saying, "I was having snacks with a friend when Im Chang-jung was sitting behind us. He suddenly came over and asked if I could buy him a beer." Im Chang-jung added, "It was such an unexpected comment that it made me laugh. I thought to myself, 'This is it.' I ended up getting her phone number that day." Seo Ha-yan continued, "From the next day, he actively pursued me. I was so captivated that I couldn't tell if it was a dream or reality."
Why Was There Opposition Due to the 18-Year Age Gap and Three Children?
Despite their relationship developing quickly, there was significant opposition from those around them. Im Chang-jung recalled, "Not only my friends but also my family were in an uproar."
Seo Ha-yan was entering her first marriage, while Im Chang-jung was a divorced father of three sons. Additionally, there was an 18-year age difference between them. Seo Ha-yan shared, "My entire family opposed it. My sister even returned from China immediately. My mother was so against it that she threatened to call my agency." Im Chang-jung added, "My wife told her mother, 'I laugh a lot and feel so happy when I'm with him, what should I do?' Hearing that made my heart ache."
Despite the opposition from family and friends, the couple overcame obstacles and married in 2017. They have since become strong partners in life. Seo Ha-yan has given birth to two more sons, and the couple is now raising five boys together.
Meanwhile, Im Chang-jung was cleared of allegations related to stock manipulation in 2023. He made his return to music with the release of his 18th studio album, 'Things That Will Happen Will Happen', in December 2024.
