tvN's Monday-Tuesday drama 'Siren' captivates viewers with its stunning visuals, art, and music in every episode. In this context, cinematographer Park Sung-yong, art director Lee Kang-hyun, and music director Heo Sung-jin have shared behind-the-scenes insights.
What's the Secret Behind the First-Ever Use of a Lens in Korea?
Cinematographer Park Sung-yong discussed the process of introducing the Panavision anamorphic lens for the first time in Korea, saying, "When I first read the script, I thought of the tone of Hollywood mystery thrillers like 'Basic Instinct' and the vintage yet romantic tone of 'La La Land.' I accidentally found out that the lens used in 'La La Land' was available in Korea, and I got the opportunity to use it."
He also highlighted "the dark areas of the screen" as a focal point of the visuals, explaining, "I tried to express the characters' psychological portrayal and dramatic atmosphere by adding various colors to the dark areas. This might be the work where I tried to express the realm of darkness the best among my works. I hoped that the characters would be well seen and their emotions conveyed the best. I hope it was well delivered to the viewers."
How Did They Collaborate on Over 450 Art Pieces?
Art director Lee Kang-hyun explained the process of sourcing artworks for 'Siren,' stating, "We individually recruited artists with diverse genres, including alumni, acquaintances, famous artists, and emerging artists, and received cooperation for about 450 pieces. The works that needed to be created were produced according to director Kim Chul-kyu's guidance." He added, "Director Kim Chul-kyu prefers new perspectives or approaches for each work, so many ideas were realized, which was very fulfilling," sharing his experience working with director Kim.
Thanks to the passionate efforts of the staff, 'Siren' satisfies the senses of viewers with its high level of completion. With the playlist themed around the relationship between Han Seol-ah (played by Park Min-young) and Cha Woo-seok (played by Wi Ha-joon) and the MD that captures the emotion of the work receiving a hot response, interest in the latter half of 'Siren' is growing.
Episode 7 of 'Siren' will air on the 23rd at 8:50 PM.
