Director Ryoo Seung-wan Expands into Romance with 'Humint'

Director Ryoo Seung-wan ventures into romance with his latest film 'Humint'.

On the 20th, at a café in Anguk-dong, Seoul, we met with director Ryoo Seung-wan to discuss his new movie 'Humint'.

'Humint' is set in Vladivostok, where secrets and truths are submerged in the icy sea, and individuals with different motives clash. Known as a 'master of action', Director Ryoo showcases intense action scenes while focusing on the romantic narrative between Park Geon (played by Park Jung-min) and Chae Seon-hwa (played by Shin Se-kyung).

When asked if he now considers himself a 'master of romance', Ryoo humorously admitted, "Sometimes I have that delusion," with a laugh.

Ryoo revealed, "I've been filming with restraint since my debut," and confessed, "I've never shot a kissing scene." He added, "I once asked Jo In-sung, 'How do you shoot a kissing scene?' If the day comes when I have to shoot one, I wonder if I should call someone for help. This is the maximum level of romance for me," he laughed.

He highlighted 'farewell' as a particularly different aspect in this film. Ryoo explained, "Besides the story of Park Geon and Chae Seon-hwa, I thought a lot about farewells. The movie 'Berlin' was ultimately about farewells too, but the weight of farewells is different now compared to then."

He continued, "In the end, everything has an end, and farewells are inevitable," adding, "Now I think about relationships and farewells. How should one part when someone leaves? What can be considered a beautiful farewell?" He also noted, "Thinking about these things, perhaps the emotional lines felt a bit different."
