Comedian and Filmmaker Shim Hyung-rae Opens Up About Custody Decision and Personal Struggles

Comedian and filmmaker Shim Hyung-rae, 67, recently revealed that he has given up custody of his child.

On the October 7th episode of MBN's 'Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night,' Shim Hyung-rae and Kim Jun-ho appeared as guests.

During the show, Shim, who is divorced, was asked if he had any plans to remarry. He responded, "Once is enough, why do it again?" indicating he has no intention of remarrying.

Host Kim Joo-ha agreed, saying, "Right," and expressed understanding of Shim's stance on remarriage. Kim then mentioned, "I heard through the news that you gave up custody instead of dividing assets or paying alimony," prompting Shim to discuss his decision.

Kim noted, "From your daughter's perspective, not spending time with her father could be a lifelong regret." Shim admitted, "I never even took her to a 'swimming pool.' I never went on a trip. I'm sorry," expressing his regret and sadness.

When asked if he still communicates with his daughter, Shim said, "We occasionally talk on the phone. She's doing well in her own life, and she originally majored in art," showing pride in his daughter's accomplishments.

Reflecting on his past, including business and marriage failures, Shim stated, "If you think it's hard, it will be endlessly hard. You have to overcome it. I see it as a process, not something to conquer. Those who have earned money before can earn it again."

Previously, Shim appeared on another program where he discussed the reasons for his divorce. He shared, "I wasn't just out to make money, but I was so busy with film shoots and business that I rarely came home. While others might be away for a day or two, I was gone for 3-4 months at a time. This led to my divorce and eventually, I was left out in the cold." He also mentioned that failed business investments contributed to the divorce.

Shim married in 1992 and has one daughter. However, he and his wife, Ms. A, amicably divorced at the end of 2011.
