Exploring Modern Fan Culture: 'Each One's - LINK' Exhibition Inspired by Pro Gamer Gumayusi

The exhibition 'Each One's - LINK', inspired by pro gamer Gumayusi (real name Lee Min-hyung), sheds light on the evolving dynamics of contemporary fan culture.

From February 6 to 8, the Stellar Gallery in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, will host the exhibition 'Each One's - LINK'.

'Each One's - LINK' is a collaborative exhibition featuring creators from various fields, using Gumayusi as a medium to reinterpret the changing relationship between stars and fans from a cultural perspective. This exhibition, supported and curated by cultural critic Kim Yeon-su, distinguishes itself by proposing critical perspectives from a critic's viewpoint rather than a fan's.

Kim Yeon-su points out that the relationship between stars and fans was once akin to a one-sided consumption structure. Stars were often unaware of their fans, who could only engage through consumption and enthusiasm, leading to issues like the 'sasaeng fan' culture. However, recent fan culture has evolved into a more horizontal relationship, with fans engaging in charitable acts or social value practices in the name of their stars, and even expanding into creative collaborations.

Despite this evolution, exhibitions centered around fans often remain limited to formats like birthday cafes or photo exhibitions for specific fan groups. 'Each One's - LINK' breaks away from these traditional methods, focusing on the process of individuals from different fields connecting through their unique languages and expertise, centered around a star.

The exhibition features various artists, including LEGO creators, who express the narratives and images of Gumayusi, as well as the pivotal moments he has created, through their work. This approach not only commemorates a single star but also demonstrates that fans can become independent creators in their respective fields, just as world-class pro gamers exist.

'Each One's - LINK' is not an exhibition where fans consume a star, but rather one that presents the potential of contemporary fan culture, where individuals from different realms resonate with respect and inspiration. It offers an opportunity for both fans familiar with Gumayusi and new visitors to reconsider the modern relationship between stars and fans.

Cultural critic Kim Yeon-su also highlights Gumayusi's potential for expansion. He notes, "Gumayusi is not confined to the pro gaming industry; like Seo Jang-hoon, who transitioned from an athlete to a broadcaster, he possesses the charisma and narrative to naturally expand into broadcasting and entertainment," adding, "I believe this potential aligns with the current fan culture."

'Each One's - LINK' will be held at the Stellar Gallery from February 6 to 8.
