Actor Choi Hyun-wook has stirred controversy with his reckless first pitch at a baseball game, creating a dangerous situation by throwing a fastball at a child batter. This incident has sparked criticism towards celebrities who use such events for self-promotion rather than understanding the significance of the occasion.
On October 9, Choi Hyun-wook participated in the ceremonial first pitch at the KBO playoff game at Incheon SSG Landers Field. His pitch went astray, narrowly missing the child's head, causing shock and dismay among the audience.
Following the backlash, Choi issued an apology on a fan communication platform, expressing regret for his actions and promising to apologize directly to the child and their parents. However, many found his explanation unconvincing, given his background as a former high school baseball player. The child's mother expressed her concern on social media, stating she trusted the event would be safe.
Choi's attire and demeanor during the pitch also drew criticism. Wearing sunglasses and a backward cap, he appeared more focused on showcasing his fashion than celebrating the game, which was deemed inappropriate for the occasion.
This is not the first time a celebrity's involvement in a baseball event has caused issues. On August 31, the cast of the new tvN drama 'Annoying Love' disrupted a game with their filming at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. Despite prior arrangements with the team, the filming caused discomfort among players and spectators.
Similarly, idol group Kiki's members participated in multiple first pitches for different teams on the same day, raising eyebrows for what seemed like blatant promotional tactics.
Cultural critic Kim Yeon-soo emphasized the importance of understanding the purpose of such events, urging celebrities to align their behavior and attire with the occasion to honor the players and fans.
