Director Park Chan-wook Discusses Oscar Submission for 'No Choice'

Director Park Chan-wook has shared his thoughts on the Oscar submission of his film 'No Choice'.

Recently, at a café in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul, we met with Director Park Chan-wook to discuss his latest film, 'No Choice'.

'No Choice' tells the story of Mansu, played by Lee Byung-hun, who struggles to find new employment after being unexpectedly laid off from a paper company where he worked for 25 years. The film is based on the novel 'The Ax' by American author Donald Westlake.

When asked about the film's box office goals, Director Park stated, "I hope the media will write articles saying that this film has somewhat revitalized the Korean film industry. Although it has been exported and making a profit isn't too difficult, I hope it does even better than that."

Though 'No Choice' has already been released, its journey is far from over. The film has been submitted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, set to take place in March next year. Director Park commented, "The Oscars have a dual nature. If the film doesn't get nominated, it allows for an early 'retirement' from promotion, offering a chance to rest and consider the next project." On the other hand, he noted, "If it gets nominated, it means several months of intense activity, starting a 'race to the death'." At 62, Director Park expressed mixed feelings, saying, "At my age, I think it would be nice if it happens," with a smile.
