Legendary Korean trot singers Jo Hang-jo and Joo Hyun-mi have joined MBN's massive trot audition show 'Legend of the Unknown' following Nam Jin.
On the 28th, MBN announced, "Jo Hang-jo and Joo Hyun-mi have confirmed their participation." Jo Hang-jo shared, "I was an unknown singer for a long time before gaining recognition in my 40s. I want to be a beacon of hope for other unknown singers," expressing his empathy with the show's mission. Joo Hyun-mi added, "Judging is always a burden, but I believe it's something I can do to further develop traditional Korean music that continues to be loved."
Both artists have previously collaborated with senior singer Lee Mi-ja in her concert. In March, during the press conference for 'Lee Mi-ja's Traditional Music Tribute Concert - Continuing the Legacy,' Lee Mi-ja personally named Jo Hang-jo and Joo Hyun-mi as successors to carry on the tradition, showcasing her trust in them.
Jo Hang-jo and Joo Hyun-mi have consistently been mentioned as role models by younger trot singers. Song Ga-in, on KBS's 'Immortal Songs,' mentioned, "I had a long period of being unknown. I endured by listening to senior Joo Hyun-mi's songs," citing her as a role model. 'Legend of the Unknown' MC Jang Min-ho also left a strong impression by singing Jo Hang-jo's 'Because I'm a Man,' the first song he learned after transitioning to trot, during the finals of 'Mr. Trot.'
With the addition of these two legends following Nam Jin, 'Legend of the Unknown' has solidified its identity of discovering 'hidden gems.' These iconic figures in the trot world are set to support unknown singers in realizing their 'dream stage.'
Jo Hang-jo debuted in 1978 as the lead vocalist of the rock band 'Seogi 1999' and went through over 20 years of obscurity before gaining attention with 'Because I'm a Man' in 1997. He solidified his position with hits like 'Man's Tears,' 'If,' and 'Lie.' Having served as a judge on numerous audition and survival programs and participated in 'I Am a Trot Singer,' he is expected to provide practical advice to contestants.
Joo Hyun-mi made her debut in 1985 with 'Rainy Yeongdong Bridge' and released numerous hits such as 'Unrequited Love,' 'Met Again,' and 'The Man from Sinsa-dong.' As a judge on major audition programs, she has helped contestants grow with her sharp evaluations and warm encouragement. She is expected to be a reliable supporter for unknown singers this time as well.
